Description:
Levis motorcycles were manufactured by Butterfields of Birmingham. they had a long and illustrious career as a producer of both two-stroke and four-stroke motorcycles. Levis had considerable success on the racetrack and won the Light Weight TT on the Isle of Man in 1920 and 1922. The Levis derived its name for the Latin word for ‘light’. which was one of the diminutive two-stroke's many virtues.
The 346cc OHV Model A was introduced for 1927. it proved a reliable and popular design and was listed for the last time in the 1940 range all be it under different model designations. All OHV Levis machines had 4 speed Burman gearboxes by 1937.
This rare old motorcycle has a lovely patina of age and is in great running order. the engine starts easily. runs well and the gear box snicks a cog smoothly and quietly.
Please note the bike has recently been brought home from South Africa and the registration number currently on the bike is not a UK number.
Cosmetic
This motorcycle is in lovely cosmetic condition it has a very nice patina of age and appears to be very original. The petrol tank is in good solid and clean condition. there are some minor chips and marks in the paint but nothing significant. internally it is clean. The oil tank is in good condition. there is a tap on the feed pipe to prevent wet sumping. although we left the bike for a week with the tap on and there was no obvious migration of the slippery stuff.
The mudguards are in good shape. both are very solid with no damage to report. there is very little. if any sign of rust or corrosion anywhere on the bike. one of the benefits of the bike having spent its life in the warm dry atmosphere in South Africa.
The seat appears to be in good condition. the rear panel has split away from the main body; the bike does come with some extension brackets that raises the seat height if required.
The twin exhaust system which is so much a part of the character of this machine is in lovely condition it does have some heat shields in place but these appear to be aftermarket items. We believe that the black finished rims are original. the front spokes have suffered a little corrosion but appear solid. these should be checked prior to use however.
Mechanical
The bike starts easily. runs very well. the decompressor is working as it should. the engine is in very good order although it does smoke a little. This is not something that we believe is a cause for great concern. The engine cases are clean with no damage and there are no signs of the bike being crashed or dropped.
The clutch works well and the gears select very cleanly and smoothly. there are no known issues in the drive train.
Chassis and Cycle Parts
The chassis and cycle parts are in good order. a small bracket has broken from the frame over the years which holds the rear of the right hand silencer this is currently wired in place but could do with a small weld for a permanent repair.
The frame is undamaged and the paint clean. with just small chips and marks in the paint. The front brake cable is broken and will need replacement. the rear brake is working well. The Druid forks are clean and in good order. and the action is smooth. the original Bakelite adjusters are in place and the tie bars are stamped with the maker’s name. The top adjuster has an Isle of Man 2p piece on it this could be removed with no damage as it is blue tacked in place but we felt this was a part of the bikes history and the choice should belong to the new owner.
Electrical
The magneto is behaving perfectly and giving a good strong spark. the battery is dead and will require replacement so we have not been able to test the lighting. The headlight will not work however as the wire while present is not connected. The light is the original Miller item with the lighthouse bad in place. the glass has been replaced at some point in the last 70 odd years. The bike is fitted with a bulb horn. it is not original but honks admirably.
The bike is not fitted with a speedometer. this was an optional extra on many pre-war machines and it may be that it never has been. there is certainly no indication that any instruments have ever been fitted.
Summary
This is a very rare and beautiful motorcycle in remarkably good order. the only work we had to do to get the bike running was to blow the fuel tap through. Personally I would not consider restoring a machine in this condition. but if that was the desire of the new owner it could not be a better starting point. This old girl would need a couple of evenings in the shed to perform a service and resolve a couple of minor issues to be in road worthy condition. The bike will need to be registered in the UK. but is exempt from both an MOT and road tax.
