Description

Up to change your life is my 650cc Ural Cossack. Transport For The Masses. The previous owner of this hurled it into the hedge after it stopped after a couple of years use. and there it rested for twenty years. I rescued it as a project for my teenage son to restore. and in the nature of teenage sons. I finished it. but then made the mistake of riding it. And in the ten years since it has trundled me to work. with a huge grin and a big laugh. it has earned a deep grudging respect. The initial rebuild involved powder coating. along with replacement Jukov carburettors and replacing the dynamo with a Ford alternator. Since then. Ford contributes with an EDIS coil driven by a BMW ignition with hall pickups. a system that has worked well on my Beemers. The heads are twin plugged. and are new. There is a story on this. along with the two new heads in the spares kit. The Russian vendor has gone off to run a 'Rock Cafe'. Probably best. I replaced the paltry oil pump with a new one. the biggest I could make to fit. and reworked the oil paths to suit. and this works very well as well. The engine is the older M63 type. the two bottom ends are M66's. If you don't like it. there are bottom ends in the spares kit. The bike also has some BMW crash bars on it. and a replacement substantial centre stand. The tank is very good. even with its slight dent on the front. The petrol tap works too. The mileage is a guess. it carried me to the Tractor Factory for more than 5 thousand. The bike goes very well. far too well in fact for the brakes. The torque is mindless. it goes around corners on its Russian tyres (in the dry). and as long as no involuntary stopping involved it is a complete laugh. The engine braking is prodigious. so with an element of anticipation. you can concentrate on the laughs. If you like talking to people. this is the bike for you. 100 times the interest factor of a Hardly-Able-To. It makes a fantastic noise. not loud. but full of indications of stuff going round. The brakes are more lock-free than anti-lock - you won't lock the wheels with those. Those ten years have produced surface rust and fading. and the exhaust pipes. although still sound. are rather corroded. The tin-work and structure is absolutely sound. The whole project needs re-building to last another ten years. and I don't have the time or the love. It has plenty of MOT left from last Summer. and requires someone who knows which end of a spanner gets hot. A centre lathe shouldn't be a stranger. either. although parts are readily available. they may not just 'drop on'. It is rewired. and has Japanese switchgear. There is a world of parts to come with the project. and although most are swine. there is the occasional pearl in there. Two later bottom ends. cylinder barrels. a good gearbox and a case. the original speedo (there is an electronic speedo on there now) and any amount of random Ural stuff. And two more new cylinder heads. New cylinder head gaskets. or some thin copper sheet and skill with tinsnips to replace the ones I have struggled with. would be good. All lenses are good. and the front light is a sealed beam unit. and excellent. Huge laugh. characterful bike. no Honda this. but don't try and motorway commute. Use it till the winter. and rebuild it. for it to reliably thunder you around with its sound and torque . Don't expect to stop in a hurry. It won't run out of charge or sparks. Did I mention the brakes? I would like a 10% Paypal deposit and the balance in cash on collection.
