So once in a while it happens that I come across a bike where even I've never heard of and also no information about is available on the net. Such an unusual bike is this 1956 La Couronne* (*The Crown). which machine was a product of the Carlier-company that was based in the Belgian city of Kortrijk. Carlier started business in the year 1935 and was well known for their tri-cycles (see image). constructed for delivery. but also for disabled persons. In 1955 they started the production of their first (and also last) motorcycle-model. which production only lasted for a single year for reason that these mainly handmade machines were too expensive for them to build. as for instance the complete panelwork and fenders etc. were handcrafted (no molds and dies job). . automatically meaning that these bikes were in the end also too expensive to sell in fair numbers. How many of these bikes have been built is not known. but for sure the output of this small manufacturer was Very low. where today it’s not even certain that any other of these bikes have survived over the years. After their one-year 'motorcycle-adventure' Carlier decided to turn back to their roots by only producing tri-cycles until the year 1970. Like the pictures are showing this machine has many nice and original details which makes it a real pleasure to look at. it is completely in original paint. has only ONE registered owner from new and covered 28069 km (17441 mile) in 59 years. It has been last used in the year 1962. where since then it has been sleeping until recent. In order to get it road-worthy again both tires and inner-tubes have been recently renewed where on this occasion also the bike has been checked through in order that is safe to use. The engine starts at First kick. is running ever so nice and out on the street the bike handles fine correct where also the gearbox works perfectly. In the toolbox are the original tools. wrapped in a 1957 newspaper!The (bomb-proof!) German made Fichtel & Sachs engine as fitted by Carlier is originally covered with metal leg-shields. which protection you can take off and put aside in case you like the bike better without them (see images). Both frame- & engine numbers are matching. The Fichtel & Sachs engine was back in the days very popular and commonly used by dozens of other European motorcycle manufacturers. The nice thing about this is. because of the fact that these F&S engines have been produced in big numbers (close to a million were made). that today there are several online Sachs engine parts-specialists around that are able to supply NOS. used and re-made parts for this type of engine against decent money. This machine has been road-registered on November 23th 1956 and the original Belgian title of back then is still with the bike. Also I’ll provide an official European Certificate of Origin which document will have (when you are the high-bid buyer) your name on and states the make. model. year. displacement. weight etc. of the bike plus an official bill of sale from my company here in Belgium.
