Description

Very rare 1977 Monza. My understanding is that only 200 of these were imported into the USA. These bikes were made in a 6SL – six speed and a 4SL – four speed. This is the 4SL model. Although Puch is known world wide for their mopeds, hey did make a few different motorcycles of which many were smaller displacement motors like this 50cc. This is an original unrestored low mileage vintage machine that is worthy of collectors status. This bike has just over 20 (twenty) original miles on it. Original tires and original key! I found a motorcycle mag from 1977 that tested this bike. I took a few pics but will include the entire mag with sale. Very cool review and they love the bike.

The story:

I found an ad in the local paper last year regarding an estate sale with many vintage motorcycles and accessories for sale. The ad mentioned Puch which caught my attention as I have been restoring and modifying Puch mopeds for many years as a hobby. Upon entering the estate sale I met with the sister of the deceased owner who was handling the sale of his assets. This house was a shrine from floor to ceiling of vintage BMW, riumph and Puch motorcycles as well as vintage Vespa and Honda scooters. Everything in this home both garage and basement was lined with pristine original examples of these bikes. There were more parts, igns and memorabilia than I have ever seen in one place. By the time I got there one dealer has bought the entire BMW and Triumph lot. There were a few Vespas and Puchs left. As soon as I saw this Monza I knew it was rare and had to see it. She explained that he had recently purchased this from the original owner on the west coast who was an avid collector and they made some cash/trade deal??? He only bought rare, ow mileage bikes in unrestored condition. One look and I bought it.

Upon further inspection I have no doubt that this bike is a true original. When I purchased the Puch it had 17 miles. My first thought was a full tear down as I normally do and then assess what was needed and rebuild. This bike was just too rare and too original to mess with. My goal was to get it running and determine what it needed.

I took the carb off and inspected. Like everything else on this bike ut as in amazing original condition with little to no wear. I performed a light cleaning of the carb and cleaned the tank. I checked the trans fluid which looked good but I changed anyway then checked the plug. Second light kick and it started right up and idled perfectly!

The great:

Everything is there with the exception of a battery. Starts and runs good. Shifts good through all four gears. Original paint is amazing – not perfect as it is 38 years old. No dents in tank all covers are in great shape. Chrome is rust free and not pitted. Seat is perfect and free of any tears. Look at the pictures as they speak for themselves. Even the rubber foot pegs show close to no wear.

The needs:

In my excitement I began to take apart the dash as I though I was going for a full teardown. I disconnected a few wires from the dash and they just need to be hooked back up. In what location I am not sure. There was no brake fluid in the reservoir but the caliper looked great, s did all the brake parts so I filled with brake fluid and bled the system. The front disc brake worked great. I then noticed a few days later that there was fluid slowly dripping from the caliper. I drained the fluid at that point. The caliper will most likely need a rebuild. A small area of paint on the lower fork tube is bubbling a bit due to the leak. The bike will need a slight tune as it runs well but seems to hesitate a bit at certain RPMs. This may be due to the lack of air filter. The seller said he must have had it but there were so many parts at the sale I could not find it. An easy find! Other than that there are a cracks in the directional plastic housing but they are all complete. That’s all I can find.

Knowing Puch mopeds like I do, see that many engine parts can still be found as they are universal to many of the other 50cc puchs. That’s great news. This is a very rare bike. I have only seen one other for sale in the USA and it was actually the European version called the Grand Prix. This is far more rare and could be ridden and enjoyed or added to a collection as is. I have owned many vintage motorcycles over the years and this is one of the coolest.

I have many many pics and can take more of specific items as needed.
