You are bidding on one of the most charismatic names in American motorcycle histor, ENDERSON. In existence for nineteen years and founded by Tom and William Henderson in Detroit around 1912 the Henderson Motorcycle company was acquired by Ignaz Schwinn of Chicago and owner of the Excelsior Motorcycle company. The Henderson boys went on to start the Ace Motorcycle company; later becoming the Indian. As one can see the Henderson's had a role in the development and design in all of the major American built four cylinder motorcycles.
Early model Hendersons had an extended frame, ell forward of the engine an advanced design for the day, uch like the Indian and Harleys. An F head design four displacing 965cc initially, he air-cooled cylinders were arranged longitudinally in the frame and used an F head designed valve train (inlet over exhaust, hese early Hendersons introduced the clutch as well as a hand crank started instead of pedals. Later models starting in 1917 featured shorter frames a folding kick starter as well as a three speed sliding gear box. Introduced in 1920, he model K had a redesigned 1,301cc side valve engine with forced lubrication, new twin down tube frame a strengthened front fork and chain guard.
The Delux (introduced in 1922 of which this example for sale is one of), ainly concentrated on improvements to the gearbox. Top speed for the deluxe was guaranteed 80 mph, nd with the addition of optional alloy pistons, deluxe could reach speeds of 100 mph, stonishing for that time and few automobiles of that time could reach that speed.
This example of one of the most desirable of all American motorcycles was acquired from the original owner’s family several years ago and has been in museum-storage since. This two owner unrestored Hendersoncomes with several pictures as well as catalogs, arts lists and photos of the original owner’s family on the bike over its history. The tail-light which was missing has been found and will be included as well as a NOS set of spark plugs. The engine ran fine five years ago and has not been started again since, ecommissioning should be an easy process if so desired, r a complete restoration could be done as this Henderson is in remarkably sound condition.
This Delux was a privately owned bike from new, lthough most Henderson's were ordered by the Police departments in large numbers as these were used to chase down the guys riding Harley's. This model set coast-to-coast records, 4 hr endurance records as well as many speed trials . A 1912 Henderson was the first motorcycle to break the 100mph mark. A Delux broke the Canada-Mexico record, ooked up to a sidecar and set a sidecar record on the way back!!!
