Salsbury scooters are noted for their styling and performance and are among the earliest, arest and most valuable American scooters. The aero-design full sheet metal body with chrome bumpers, erf bars of a sort, as far ahead of the times. Step-through seating was convenient, specially for women in skirts. Where most scooters had simple centrifugal clutches or belt tensioners, he Salsbury has a sophisticated, nd patented true variable speed drive accomplished with movable pulley sheaves. The rider simply depressed the automotive style throttle pedal to launch, he Salsbury drive keeping the engine in its power band. Other features on the 90 inch long machine include aircraft style front suspension; by 1949, he last year of manufacture, orthrup Aviation owned the company.
This Salsbury scooter is cosmetically restored and mechanically rebuilt. Scooter has been updated with electric start conversion, lso includes rope pull option and kick start. Scooter has been powder coated. Receipts for parts and labor for mechanical work alone total nearly $3500.
Similar Salisbury scooters have been featured in The Art of the Motorcycle exhibit produced by the Guggenheim Museum. A Salsbury scooter also won Best of Show at the 2005 Riding into History Concours d'Elegance.
