1952 Matchless 500cc Super Clubman.
This motorcycle is only reluctantly offered for sale. as it is my pride and joy. The reason? I am being forced to sell it to fund my divorce settlement.
Please have a good look at the photo's. nbsp;this motorcycle is in immaculate condition. No expense has been spared by myself or the previous owner. Where possible all original parts have been professionally refurbished to the highest standard. The best available new parts have been used. pattern parts being used only where absolutely necessary. My intention was to use it as daily transport. therefore reliability was essential. Much of the mechanical work and machining was undertaken by my son. an engineering artificer with the Royal Navy.
Work carried out to date:
Swinging arm rebuilt with new bushes. Forks rebuilt using all new internal parts. Rear suspension (jampots) rebuilt using all new internal parts. Hubs rebuilt using new bearings. Wheels rebuilt using British rims and stainless spokes. Tyres are as new. All sprockets and chains are new. including gearbox sprocket. Brake lining are new. Gearbox rebuilt by Sammy Miller. New clutch plates. springs and roller bearings. Magneto and dynamo rebuilt by Tony Cooper. New Amal carb from Surrey cycles. New seat cover. All new control cables. New exhaust pipes and silencers from Armours. Paintwork is in cellulose and in very good condition. Chrome is excellent.
Work needed to complete:
Magneto and dynamo have been rebuilt by Tony Cooper (the best in the business) and will need refitting. New solid state regulator. with full fitting instructions. nbsp;again from Tony Cooper. will need fitting. this simply replaces the internals on the original Lucas regulator box.
Engine starts easily and pulls very well indeed. The gearbox is like new and changes are a pleasure. It is a very pleasant and comfortable machine to ride. The clutch is good. The brakes took a long time and a lot of effort to get right. but are now good. Lucas indicators are fitted because I feel they are essential in traffic. but these could easily be removed if needed. The observant among you will notice the absence of oil leaks on my garage floor. I wouldn't claim that it is completely oil tight. but it's pretty good and took a lot of hard work to achieve.
Spares included in the sale:
Matchless twin engine. 600cc. This engine came with the bike when I bought it. I replaced it with the 500cc unit for the sake of originality. It ran quite well. but I have stripped it for inspection as I intended to rebuild it and have collected a lot of spares for it. most of these are common to both engines and include all the hard to find parts like cam followers (2 sets) barrels and pistons are good (fitted with new rings) Connecting rods (2 sets) crankshaft will need regrinding. There are a lot of spares common to both engines.
Matchless frame in good condition. swinging arm bushes have been replaced. This was to be my next project. having always admired the works scrambler/trials bikes. I considered using the 600cc twin engine in this because I saw one at a vintage event which went very well indeed.
2 into 1 Siamese exhaust and silencer. as fitted to the later twins. Would look nice on the scrambler/trials. Good chrome.
Boxes of Matchless spares. mostly for the twin. but some from a single I used to own. These include a Lucas magneto. horns. levers. Amal carbs. cables etc. There are a lot of spares. far too many to list separately.
Tools included in the sale:
Cantilever tool box. filled with all the tools you are likely to need to maintain the bike. These include good quality Whitworth spanners and sockets. New service parts. filters etc. Large quantity of correct zinc plated nuts. bolts and washers. Some special tools. including mag pinion puller. Sealants. gaskets etc. all in good condition.
2 spray guns and quantity of paint and thinners.
Seat/tool trolley with tray for parts and tools under. on castors. Useful bit of kit. saves your knees when working on the bike. Almost new.
Although the bike has been kept in a heated workshop. there is a good quality. breathable. all weather cover for it in excellent condition.
I will not separate the spares and tools from the bike. they will be sold together.
Paperwork:
V5 in my name. currently Sorn. All Mot certificates since 2000 although being a historic vehicle. it is Tax and Mot exempt. Certificate from AJS and Matchless owners club to verify frame and engine numbers. nbsp;manufacturing date etc. . from factory records. Workshop manuals and parts lists. Receipts and invoices for spares purchased and work undertaken.
Restoration manual. by Roy Bacon; Matchless and AJS post war singles and twins.
