Description

Welcome to the auction of my late father in law's rare NSU Quickly Cavallino. The bike is a true 'barn find' having been stored in his workshop for 39 years! The story goes that he obtained the bike through membership of Darlington Scooter Club. the 2nd owner was emigrating to Australia (10 pound poms) in 1965. it's not clear whether the bike was running at the time. I suspect not as told it needed a new piston.  I think my father in law struggled to find a spare piston back in the day (no internet) but probably intended it to be a retirement project but sadly died from a stroke 15 years ago. The bike has sat in the shed. but the need for my mother in law to go into residential care meant house clearance.  I had restored a Suzuki TS before I decided to take on the NSU. As it has been stored in dry conditions and wheels removed with tyres deflated the bike was in excellent condition. but had for some unknown reason been painted green in place of the original red. the wheels had been painted cream to match the cream on tank (I didn't re paint the cream on tank. only the red) The bike was completely stripped and all components checked. cleaned and re-painted before re-assembly.  I have used all the original components removed from the bike. as it was quite young when taken off the road (approx 5 years) all the components were serviceable. some marks. wear on seat. cables outer have some marks. slight marks on un painted cream section of tank but not bad and done to retain as much originality and authenticity as possible.  Only new pedals were fitted as the originals were too pitted (originals included in sale). A new piston kit was obtained with gasket kit from NSU specialist Roger Worton. along with the Cavallino tank sticker. After building the bike was started and runs fine but is reluctant to idle. I have ridden in around outside house and feels quite peppy. more than I was expecting to be honest! The bike passed its MOT last week. is MOT exempt but I plan to transfer the original number plate onto my car for sentimental reasons. if the new owner wishes to keep the number I would accept this but would be for a premium of £1500. if not bothered and is just interested in the bike then obviously it will come with a year related 1959 plate. I have the original RF60 registration that shows the original owner bought on 12 Sep 59. the 2nd owner bought on 19 Oct 63. my father in law bought 21 May 65. only transferred to my mother in law after his death in 98. then to me in Sep 14. Also have a MOT issued 2-10-64. The transfer of the plate may hold up the sale/ release of the bike for a short time. am willing to accept a deposit of £250 within 24 hours of auction ending with the remainder as cash on collection to be mutually arranged. The bike is located in Darlington. in the North East (has always been owned by Darlington residents) obviously would encourage viewing. but if too far away I could recommend a reliable courier I have previously used. I have pictures taken of the bike in the shed when painted green. if want to see or have any questions please let me know. but no time wasters.
