Description

1982 Suzuki GS550L(Z) Here’s your chance to own a vintage piece of classic motorcycling history. Title in hand. registered and insured currently in Florida. Starts and runs rough. My son and I bought this bike as a true basket case for his high school senior project for $500. He put over 150 hours into getting it back on the road. including lots of hours with the owner of a local independent motorcycle shop. who taught him everything from how to change a tire to how to adjust valves and install a new clutch. He got an “A” on the project. and rode it to school (and his prom). We also put just about $1. 00 in new parts into it. not counting the paint. Spiral-bound service manual and lousy downloaded jpeg version included. What’s that? You don’t care about all that. you just want the good. the bad and the ugly? OK. here’s the worst of it: The bike runs. but not consistently or well. Might be an air leak. might be a fouled carb. might be something worse. I don’t know. If I knew. I’d fix it. The “high temp engine paint” didn’t take on the exhaust and the engine as well as it should have. The paint isn’t stock. The stock odometer says something like 13. 00 miles. but it’s broken and so was the cable when we bought it. Actual mileage unknown. Here’s the good stuff. in no particular order: New Acewell 2853 combination speedo/tach (All indicator lights work. about $220) Carbs professionally cleaned. painted. rebuilt and synchronized. The bike sat for several weeks while we were moving. and now I suspect the carbs need to be cleaned again. New tires (less than 200 miles. I’d guess) New clutch plates. new front and rear sprockets. new chain The seat is in great shape – unusual for a vintage bike. no tears or scuffs. Rebuilt front brake (both cylinders). new front and rear brake shoes. New air box. re-sealed. and new air filter All new rubber boots and o-rings from the airbox to the carbs and from the carbs to the engine New rear progressive shocks Rebuilt front forks New headlight New clutch and throttle cables New bearings all the way around: swingarm. steering head. both wheels New crappy bar-end mirrors New “clubman style” handlebars New grips New LED turn signals front and rear New turn signal relay to control LED signals New all-LED integrated turn signal/brake/running light with license plate holder Wiring harness removed and checked for problems. then reinstalled Valves adjusted New petcock New battery and band New oil and filter Gas tank cleaned and interior sealed Except for the handlebars. we still have all the take-offs: original mirrors. gauges (they’re broken). turn signals. the old airbox. etc. There’s also a box of miscellaneous “spare” parts that were ordered and not put on. or were leftovers from kits we bought to get one part we needed. A whole lot of other even more minor stuff replaced. We kept BikeBandit and a couple of other online vintage-parts places in business for a while. Here’s some that just is – it’s not great. but it’s also not surprising from a 30+ year old bike: Front fender rivets holding it to the bracket are loose – a bit of rattle Gas tank was professionally painted. but the rest of the bike was rattle-canned. Most of it looks good. Some not so much. The front/handlebar switch for the brake light doesn’t work. We bought a box-of-bolts from an ebay seller. Looks like someone broke a bike down for parts and boxed up everything that’s not a “part. ” The random box is included. This bike is sold as-is. where-is. with no warranty. express or implied. I strongly recommend you check it out in person. or have it checked by someone you trust. I have described it to the best of my ability. but I'm not guaranteeing I didn't miss something. I’m probably forgetting some stuff. Feel free to ask any questions. For $1. 00/mile (round trip. $25 minimum. paid cash on delivery) I’ll deliver the bike. on my trailer. to you or your shipper up to 150 miles from Jacksonville. Florida. If you’re having it shipped. you’ll need to handle everything – I’m not a dealer. and I’ve never shipped a bike. Or you can come get it (bring a trailer or truck).
