1982 Suzuki GS1000SZ Katana Very reluctant sale - runs and rides great. I purchased this Katana in 2008 in a very sorry state. The bike had sat outside for a long time. but it was mostly complete and only had 4535 miles. The bike received a full frame up restoration starting in 2009. The bike was disassembled completely. the frame was powder coated silver and the bike was reassembled - the fairing frame. side stand. fuse holder and other black parts were powder coated black. The reassembly included numerous new OEM fasteners. and many new OEM parts including pegs. mirrors. grips. cables etc. The engine was in excellent condition which was to be expected given the low miles - it received a valve adjustment. new external gaskets and carb insulators. Oil and filter have been changed every season while I have owned the bike. A 'Big Crank' AGM battery in the stock size was fitted. The ignition and charging system is stock. The bike always starts easily and runs very well. No nasty noises. nbsp;smoke or leaks - it pulls strongly from low revs and is smooth at all speeds. I would not hesitate to ride it any distance. The bike has never failed to start for me or ever left me stranded in the 7 years I have owned it. The bodywork is very nice. The tank and tail panel were purchased from Japan. The remaining panels are a combination of nice originals and new replacements. The front fairing was repainted after filling in the (prone to damage) turn signal holes. A new tinted screen was fitted along with all new mounting hardware. The front fairing also includes the lower 'fins' that the were not fitted to the US Katanas. The rear tail panel was purchased from Japan and is devoid of the US mandated side reflectors. The rear fender is stock (these are often cut up and shortened) as are the turn signals. The rear signals are mounted in the stock location. the fronts have been relocated to just below the fairing. All lights. signals. horn etc. work as they should and the charging system is in great shape. The seat was professionally reupholstered in vinyl (versus the original suede like material) in blue and grey. I always liked the look of the wire wheels fitted to the Australian and New Zealand factory race Katanas. Last year the bike was fitted with a D. I. D. 18x3. 00 rear wheel and a 19x1. 85 front. Both rims are polished alloy. Both rims received new bearings and seals and were re-laced using new spokes. Tires are Pirelli Sport Demons 100/90/19 front and 140/70/18 rear with very little use. New RK 630 o-ring chain and sprockets (alloy rear) were also fitted during the restoration. Front and rear brakes were rebuilt during the restoration and new braided lines were fitted. A later model Nissin master cylinder with adjustable lever is used up front. and the stock rear master cylinder was rebuilt. The rear shocks are a very rare set of aluminum bodied period Fox shocks in excellent condition. The swing arm and chain guard are stock. The front forks are in excellent condition with no signs of pitting or wear on the tubes. I had planned to rebuild the front forks this season and a new set of Progressive springs. along with OEM Suzuki seals. dust covers and retaining rings are included with the sale (see picture). Also included is the original seat strap and speedometer/tachometer cluster along with a set of ant-dive block of plates for the front forks. The steering damper. nbsp;oil cooler. 240KPH cluster. carb insulator and fork brace were all imported from Japan - the oil cooler bolts onto the stock frame mounts and includes a thermostat. It feeds from the pressure sensor port on the rear of the engine (pressure sensor still works with the cooler fitted). The 11 position adjustable steering damper is not visible externally. but it can be seen (and easily adjusted) by removing the panel below the RH side of the fairing. The fork brace is a vey rare Coerce honeycomb brace. The exhaust is a HIndle canister system - header and mid pipe are nickel plated steel and the canister is aluminum. This system uses exhaust collars with retaining springs so the header can be removed quickly and easily for oil filter changes. It has a nice tone without being overly loud. This pipe does not allow the center stand to be used so the bike does not currently have one fitted. The frame is unmodified in any way. so the new owner could install a center stand if they wished. however the Hindle would need to be replaced if this was done. The carbs are Keihin CR33's (round slides). New OEM Suzuki insulators were fitted along with the correct spigots. The factory choke in the LH side cover is disabled as the CR's have a very effective enrichment lever for cold starts. The bike fires cleanly and quickly every time and the enrichment lever is only required on very cold starts. and only for the initial startup. The bike idles cleanly and pulls smoothly throughout all of the gears - the CR's are responsive and WOT performance is great. The carbs were also fitted with an external adjustment knob for the idle speed (situated just behind the enrichment lever on the LH side of the bike). The carbs are fitted with a high quality set of K&N pod filters. Katanas use a vacuum petcock and the factory petcock is still in place. It flows more than enough for the CR's. however because the vacuum shutoff is not connected. the petcock must be switched to prime to run the bike. and then turned to on when the bike is parked away. It's a simple enough routine to get used to. The original 85MPH instrument cluster is included (pictured). It was too far gone to restore. so I purchased a clean used 240KPH (150MPH) unit from Japan. The cluster was installed during the restoration and showed 4940KM's at that time. The mileage now reads 5873KM's which means the bike has done 933KM's since the restoration. That converts to 579 miles. So the total miles on the bike now is 5114 (4535 + 579). While I built this bike to suit my taste. I was careful not to modify the frame or make any changes that could not be reversed if the new owner decided to do so. The Yoshimura decals on the tank can be removed. and the frame has not been modified in any way. The engine is also 100% stock other than the aforementioned bolt on external items (Keihin CR's. oil cooler etc. ). I never planned to sell this bike when I sourced and restored it - however. ill health forces me to do so and the sale is a very reluctant one. I have several 80's superbikes but none of them draw a crowd like this Katana does. A short video of the bike running can be found here; https://www. youtube. com/watch?v=Jc2CkRpW6DIThis is a used motorcycle - no warranty is expressed or implied.
