Own a unique one of a kind 1990 GSXR 750 that has been made to look like a 1989. This is how I bought this beautiful bike several years ago and only until now upon attempting to sell it, ave I have found out what I truly have, r think I have. Thanks to all the experts for putting me on this path. It is greatly appreciated. In recent days I have worked hard to find out as much as I could. Honestly, ack when I purchased this bike, thought it was beautiful and believed it was correct as it had been represented to me.
Why was it re-bodied and or repainted you may ask? I have no idea other than to think logically that it had been crashed in some fashion and they decided to put it back together as a 1989? Not sure what the thought process was with this as it makes no sense but it is what it is. All the body panels look to be stock Suzuki with even the warning stickers attached. This could not have been inexpensive to do at the time, o again I have no idea why they chose to go this way. Perhaps it has just been repainted with the stock body work to look like a 1989? I can’t tell myself but this is also possible. The wheels I have been told are from an 1100 as well as the gauges but that could be false as there is just no way for me to tell being a Non-Expert. I do know it was red when it was shipped to the USA if you run the VIN number as I did. The motor as well as some other bits had been safety wired but that was from the previous owner who ran it at a track day or two before he sold it to me. He had bought the bike in the same configuration you see here so I never bothered to worry about it or the details. Life was very busy back then and the bike ran and rode perfectly and clearly I did not do my research.
So as you can tell I am a bit crest fallen regarding my beautiful GSXR but that being said she is still quite stunning to look at, ven now, nd has never given me an issue. She runs perfect and tracks straight as an arrow. Reserve is about half what this bike would be worth if it was period correct but I am not giving it away. This GSXR would also make a great vintage race bike.
Current condition in detail:
Front upper fairing is in good shape though there is some slight damage on the right side. This was due to a no speed drop on my part. I repaired it as minimally as possible and left the mirror off. Its fine and has posed no structural issue. I do not have that mirror. The left mirror has a slight crack in the smaller riser arm (was this way when I got it and it has not posed a problem).
The fairing shield is in great shape and paint is in great shape.
Lights work as they should.
The levers are not stock. I do not have the original levers any longer but they are correct fitment for this bike and work as they should. Grips and bar ends are not stock.
Right foot peg is bent slightly. There is a non–stock bolt in the heal plate bracket. The original rattled out.
All gauges work as they should with no issues.
The gas tank is also in great shape. Small dimple on top of tank behind filler cap (was there when I bought it) I left it alone as it is very slight.
Keys work as they should. Gas tank inside is in excellent shape.
Both side panels are in good shape upper and lower. The right upper has a very small inner repair that is not noticeable. All fasteners are in great shape.
Both left and right lower side panels have slight paint repair at apex width. It was this way when I purchased the bike and shows no structural compromise.
The rear panels are also in good shape, ith just slight stress cracks due to age.
The rear solo cowl is also solid and in good shape. The yellow stripe is just 3m taping and the gray back pad is now black.
I do have the rear seat two-up set up in perfect shape. The seat itself is in great shape.
The rear shock, wingarm, nd chain and sprockets are all in good shape. The chain guard is an aftermarket piece.
The rear undertail is mostly stock however the left side blinker mount was cracked when I got the bike and I repaired it as minimally as possible as to not compromise the original form of the bike. The tail was also cut just below the plate mount by the previous owner.
The bike has only run synthetic oil since I have owned it with proper oil and filter changes at regular intervals. The battery is new from this past summer and does have a tender lead attached. The motor, ir box, arbs and all related are stock. There are some remaining safety wired bits on the bike.
All in all this is a great bike and it’s just a bummer it was altered years ago. I never picked up on it until now and have treated it like it was a collector bike since the day I owned it. It is still a great example of that crazy era and the last of the air/oil GSXR’s.
