Description:

If like me you hark from the golden age of motorcycling then it is almost certain you will remember Suzuki?ˆ™s seminal X7. the bike that laid claim to being the first true 100 mph 250cc machine. This was an era where two stokes ruled the world and you could graduate to a real motorcycle just a year after taking to the road with a Fizzy or an AP50. The X7 or GT250 X7 to use is full title was far more than a revamp of the previous years GT250C model. more powerful and considerably lighter. it set the bench mark for the 250cc class and was undoubtedly one of the machines responsible for the learner law change that was to come.

This particular X7 has suffered a little over the years but it is complete. does start and would make a straightforward and rewarding project for the long winter evenings.

Cosmetic

This motorcycle is starting to show its age a little cosmetically. the tank has a dent on the top left hand side and the paint has flaked around it. There are a few other minor dings and the paint has chips and marks. there is some surface rust at the rear where the seat fits against it. forming a moisture trap. All that said the tank is very useable and would repaint well. The side panels are both in good order. as are the definitive air box covers. the painted seat trim panels and the tail piece are again undamaged and in good shape but the paint finish is beginning to show its age.

The rear plastic mudguard has survived the years well and the front chrome guard is in good condition. the chrome is clean and bright.

The seat is in good condition the original cover is in good condition and the base while it has some surface rust is good and solid. The exhaust system does have some damage which can be seen in the pictures. The left hand pipe does have a number of small dents on the silencer and the chrome is fairly poor. the right hand pipe has a couple of scrapes again visible in the pictures; both pipes are useable.

The wheel rims are in good order but again the original finish is worn and chipped and if the bike were to be restored they would require repainting.

Mechanical

We have had the engine fired up and there were no signs of any issues. compression is good on both cylinders. The oil pump cable is frayed and will require replacement. for this reason we ran the bike on remote fuel tank with pre-mix. The carbs will also need a thorough clean through as they overflow.

We have not ridden the bike but the gears select well on a static check. we have not identified any significant issues with the drive train.

The left hand engine outer casing has been damaged in the past and has been welded we have included a close up picture of this damage. We suspect that the chain may have snapped at some point in the past as the engine appears to have been restamped with its original number again. this is most visible on the ?ˆ?0?ˆ™and the ?ˆ?5?ˆ™ where the restamp is not perfectly aligned with the original factory number. We do not think the number has been changed but instead suspect an old repair.

Chassis

The chassis and cycle parts are in good order. the frame is clean and undamaged. the frame paint is generally good with only minor chips and marks. The headstock. swinging arm and front wheel bearings show no signs of play. there is a very small amount of play in the rear and we would recommend replacement.

The front disc brake and rear drum both appear to be working well on a static check. On the suspension side. the fork stanchions are clean. the action is smooth and the damping effective. the dust covers are missing. The rear shocks are very clean and again damping well.

Electrical

The ignition system is working well as we have had the bike fired up. The headlight is not working and the glass is broken. the tail light is working as is the brake light on both front and rear brakes. The indicators are not working only the left rear lights currently. the horn is working.

The switch gear is the original item but missing the on / off and hi / lo plastic knobs. there is no damage the knobs appear to have been removed in the past and not refitted. The instruments are correct and in good clean condition. the speedometer is KPH.

Summary

This is a generally clean original X7. and recommissioning it should prove a straightforward process. This motorcycle would also benefit from some cosmetic restoration to return it to its former glory; this could be as a rolling restoration or as a very rewarding way to pass the long winter evenings.
