Description:

There are few classic motorcycles that are more stylish. better known or more enjoyable to ride than a Triumph Bonneville. While the late 60s Bonnies now come with very large price tags attached. the later T140 machines still remain relatively affordable for the time being. Even rare machines such as this limited edition export model Silver Jubilee are currently represent good value and. given the recent increases in values of this particular model. it would suggest an excellent investment.

T140V is also arguably a more practical classic motorcycle for modern roads with its five-speed gearbox. conventional pattern left hand shift and disc brakes front and rear.

This particular bike is a matching numbers example of a 1977 limited edition of just 1. 00 export model Silver Jubilee T140V Bonnevilles and was built in April 1977. It has just 8. 196 recorded miles and. while we cannot guarantee the accuracy of this. we have identified nothing either mechanically or cosmetically that would cause us to doubt it. The bike retains all of the original features of the Silver Jubilee edition machines from the chromed outer engine casings. the red. white and blue lined wheel rims down to the Silver Jubilee specific tank centre.

Cosmetic

The tank is in very good condition. the original paint is in good order there are no dents or damage. Internally the tank has some old fuel residue caused by storage. this would be better washed out but it is not a cause for any concern.

The side panels are both in very good order with the 1977 Silver Jubilee badges in place with the ?ˆ?One of a Thousand?ˆ™ legend. The paint is in good condition. The front mudguard has a small scratch in the paintwork but no dents or any other significant damage. the rear mudguard is in similarly good order.

The paint is the original Silver Jubilee edition scheme and in good order throughout as can be seen in the pictures. it is not entirely perfect but it is remarkably clean for a 37 year old motorcycle and the bike has obviously been well stored.

The seat is clean and original the original Silver Jubilee cover with its red piping and specific logo is undamaged; the base is clean and solid.

The exhaust system is in good shape throughout. the balanced down pipes appear to be the original items and the model correct silencers are new.

Mechanical

The engine starts and runs beautifully; it is mechanically very quiet and sounds lovely. there is no sign of smoke on start up or when the engine is running. The gears select cleanly and easily.

There is no damage on the engine casings or indication of any accident damage. The original air box is fitted and in good order.

There are no identified issues in the drive train.

Chassis

The frame paint is clean. it does have a few minor marks and chips and has been work over the years where the seat sits against the frame rails although this is not visible with the seat closed. The swinging arm is in good condition there is no sign of any play in the headstock. swinging arm or wheel bearings.

On the suspension side the fork action is smooth. damping effective. the seals are tight. the stanchions do have some very light marks outside of the operational are. The marks are very minor and are not immediately apparent without close inspection but a pair of replacement stanchions is available for under £50. The shocks are cosmetically clean although there is a little dulling of the chrome on the springs. they are working well and damping effectively.

The front and rear brakes will both require some attention. both of the master cylinders have suffered through standing again these parts are readily available a stainless replacement barrel for a T140 master cylinder from LF Harris is available for £35.

The wheels are both in good condition; the rims are both original Dunlop items they are the original items. the rim centres are finished in blue with red and white stripes to complement the paint scheme. There is some light pitting in the chrome rims in some areas and some of the paint is now starting to wear a little.

The instruments are the original Smiths items and in clean cosmetic condition.

Electrical

The headlight is not working and this will require some investigation. the tail light and side lights are working so this should not prove a difficult fix. As the brakes are not working it has not been possible to test the operation of the brake lights. the indicators are working but the flasher unit appears to have given up the ghost and will need replacement. The ignition switch body has cracked and it is possible to pull out the lock from the body. a new ignition switch body will be required the lock can be utilised within that. alternatively a complete replacement can be sourced easily for less than £20.

The original Lucas switchgear is very clean and undamaged.

Summary

The originality and patina of this machine is lovely it shows no sign at all of having suffered any bodgery; it is a beautiful undamaged and untouched example of a rare limited edition machine. The bike does need some small jobs doing but nothing that will require significant outlay in terms of time or expense.   A week of winter evenings should prove enough to have this bike ready for the road although. since the rain shows no signs of letting up for the foreseeable. I would be inclined to take my time and give the bike a full recommission and good deep clean.
