Description:

There are few classic motorcycles that are better known or more enjoyable to ride than a Triumph 650 twin and the T120R Bonneville is the most sought after of all. This design icon was Triumph?ˆ™s flagship model. the sporting twin. and named in honour of Triumphs successful land speed record attempt at the Bonneville salt flats.

This particular Bonnie is one of the very last oil tank models built. manufactured in June 1970 just prior to production switching to the oil in frame model for the 1971 model year in August 1970. as such it represents the pinnacle of development of this true classic.

This machine is presented in restored condition and it runs and rides every bit as beautifully as it looks. Please read below for a full description.

Cosmetic

This motorcycle is in beautiful condition having been subject to a recent restoration. the tank has been refinished and as would be expected the tank has no dents or damage. The side panel and oil tank are in similarly good order.

The mudguards are in good condition. the chrome is clean and bright. there is some very minor damage low on the right hand side. this is a small area of beading missing from the very edge and is far from obvious but was identified in a detailed inspection with the bike raised on a bench. The front mudguard is undamaged.

The seat has been replaced with a new item and as would be expected both the cover and the base are excellent. The exhaust system continues the theme. the chrome is bright and clean and there is no damage.

The rear wheel rim is the original Dunlop items. the front rim appears to be a replacement and again the chrome is in good order.

Mechanical

The engine starts well with a tickle on the carbs and no throttle; it runs very well and is mechanically very quiet. there is no smoke or indication of any issues.

We have ridden the bike and it rides well. the clutch works as it should and all gears select cleanly and smoothly.

We have not identified any issues in the drive train.

Chassis

The chassis and cycle parts are in good order. the frame is very clean and undamaged. the frame paint appears to have been refinished and looks lovely.   The headstock. swinging arm and wheel bearings show no signs of play.

The front brake and rear brakes are both working well. On the suspension side. the fork action is smooth and the damping effective. The rear shocks are very clean and damping well again we believe these to be recent replacements.

Electrical

The electrics are working the headlight works on both high and dip beam. the tail light is working as is the brake light and horn. there are no indicators fitted to the bike as standard.

The switch gear is the minimal standard item and in good order. The instruments have been replaced with new items and are very clean and working correctly.

Summary

This is a very clean and beautifully presented Bonneville. it is clear that someone has spent a significant amount of time and money on the bike in the recent past. We believe that the bike has had a recent engine rebuild although we have no proof of this so we would recommend a change of oil and a running in period to be on the safe side.

We have not identified any issues. the engine is exceptionally quiet mechanically and the bike runs and rides very well. All in all this is a beautiful example of one of the most sought after and useable classic motorcycles.
