Description.

There are few classic motorcycles that are more stylish. more iconic or more enjoyable to ride than a Triumph Bonneville. The late 1960s Bonnies are perhaps the most desirable and sought after of all as this is the peak of development of the pre oil in frame machines and in my eyes the prettiest of all unit engine machines.

This particular machine is a matching numbers built just a few months before the summer of love. it has been restored and is in beautiful condition there are a few jobs to finish and some minor improvements that a new owner may wish to make but it is mechanically and cosmetically a lovely example of a truly practical classic motorcycle. Please see below for a full assessment of condition.

The paintwork has been well finished. in a very sharp black and silver paint scheme. unfortunately there is a small scratch on the top of the tank; there are no dents or damage to the tank itself. The side panel and oil tank have also been repainted and again are in very good order. the mudguards are correctly painted on the 1969 model and are finished to match the tank in silver with a black central stripe.

The chrome work is exceptionally clean. the exhausts appear new. they are undamaged and exceptionally clean; these silencers are model correct and give the beautiful and distinctive note of a Bonnie. The two wheel rims again are both new and in exceptionally clean. the spokes have also been replaced as part of the rebuild.

The frame is very clean having been refinished it has few. if any marks. The forks are in good order. the action is smooth and damping effective. the rear shock absorbers are new replacement items and working well. The front brake is the correct win leading shoe set up fitted from 1968 onward it is working correctly. the rear brake is also working as it should. The seat is an aftermarket item the base is plastic and the cover while correct is a replacement. the catch is missing as is the latch on the seat. The bike has the correct air filters. The centre stand is not fitted. however the mounting lugs are all present and correct.

The bike has new replacement grey faced replica Smiths clocks and the switch gear is working correctly. The electrics are working. the loom has seen some work and it is not the tidiest job. personally I would be inclined to tidy it up a bit. a straightforward task given that everything is working and it is merely the replacement of existing wires. The ignition switch is the incorrect item as is the Ammeter. which is broken and will need replacement. The bike will require a battery.

The engine is very clean and in good cosmetic condition. it starts well and once running the engine is mechanically quiet it ticks over very smoothly and revs cleanly. The chain has come off at some point in the past and damaged the casing. this currently has a plate screwed over it (please see the photographs) as can be seen this damage is far from obvious and is purely cosmetic. it does not affect the oil tightness of the engine or the running.

The carburetors have either been professionally cleaned are new items. they are in very nice condition. The clutch works well and the gears select smoothly and cleanly.

We are not aware of any issues in the drive train.

In summary this is a lovely example of a very sought after classic motorcycle. it has clearly had a great deal of time and money lavished upon it. The mechanical condition is also excellent. the engine is very sweet running and mechanically very quiet.

Aside from the seat catch this bike needs very little. for those who want to spend a couple of evenings tinkering the Ammeter and ignition switch could be replaced and the wiring tidied up a little. beyond that this is definitely a motorcycle to ride and enjoy.
