Description:

The DT series was created by Yamaha in the late 1960s to fill a gap that they felt was a largely untapped in the market for off-road motorcycles. at the time only a few specialty European manufacturers made machines specifically for off-road use. This led to one of the most successful ranges of off road bikes. with capacities ranging from 50 to 400cc.

Cosmetic

Overall this machine is very good condition and has clearly seen a level of restoration work.

All of the paint work has been refinished. the paint is not the best we have seen but it is a very acceptable finish for a bike to be ridden and enjoyed.

The petrol tank has no dents or damage. it is clean internally aside from light fuel residue. The side panels are in good condition. with no broken lugs. the mudguards are also both in good order.

The seat is in good condition with no splits in the cover and a good base. The exhaust system which is so much a part of the character of these machines is in good shape. it has clearly been maintained and repainted and there are some signs of surface corrosion but it is very solid and has no dents or damage. The original alloy wheels wheel rims are both in good order.

Mechanical

The bike is missing its kick start which will require replacement. however we have started the bike on a bump and the engine runs and rides very well. The engine runs cleanly and pulls well with no signs of any mechanical issues. We have identified some minor damage on the left hand outer engine casing mounts and have included a specific photograph so that these can be seen. The top rear mounting point is damaged for the outer rear chain cover is broken. this is a cosmetic defect and does not cause any issues in use; there is also a small piece broken on the front edge of the outer casing.

The gears all select cleanly and the clutch works as it should

Chassis and Cycle Parts

The chassis and cycle parts are in good order.

The frame is appears undamaged. there are minor chips and marks in the paint. The front brake is not currently working as there is damage to the cable adjuster mounting. this will require repair before the bike can be used.

The fork are both clean and in good order the action is smooth and the damping effective. The rear shock is in good order and is damping well.

The bike is fitted with the original airbox.

The bike will need a new battery as part of the recommissioning service. but the lighting is working with the engine fired up. The instruments are in good cosmetic condition.

Summary

This is a good. clean and tidy DT400 MX it will need the issue with the front brake plate resolved and a replacement kickstart. The engine and drive train are in good order and the bike rides very well. cosmetically the bike is in good order and this big DT makes a practical and sought after classic motorcycle.
