For sale - a 1978 Yamaha XS400F with 7567 miles. I purchased this bike in February of this year and have covered about 2000 miles on it. The previous owner purchased it from an Indiana University professor who had gotten it as a barn find. He proceeded it get the bike into running condition with minimal maintenance so much of the bike is original. He did replace the side covers, ut please note that the original grab bar is missing.
Cosmetically the bike is in decent condition, ith minor rust and scratches on the paint. There is a chip in the black paint on the headlight on the left side; there are a couple chips in the plastic on the back side of the left mirror, nd a few spots on the finish on the front forks. The tank is overall in good shape. Some of the finish on the engine cover has peeled away. As mentioned above, he side covers are non-original and they do not exactly match the paint on the gas tank. There are several very small holes in the seat; please refer to the pictures.
Mechanically, he engine is very sound; it starts easily cold or hot, ith either the electric or the kick starter. It does not smoke at all and does not leak any oil. Since I purchased this bike I have repaired a couple of small issues. The rear brake was sticking, ot to the point where it was not rideable but it was felt during shifts so I bled the rear brake line and removed the rear caliper. It had surface rust on the bottom side so it was removed and I reassembled the system which seems to have fixed the issue. Another issue I have not resolved is that the front forks seep oil. I replaced the fluid but I did not replace the fork seals, hich would fix the issue.
The bike shifts through all the six gears, nd all the lights, ncluding the turn signals, nd the horn work. The rear tire has recently been replaced and currently has 300 miles on it. I have tried to be very detailed in my description so there are no surprises to the buyer as I have sold several motorcycles on eBay previously, lease check my rating, nd would like to keep my high rating.
