Description

1982 YAMAHA XJ650L SECA TURBO
This here is a 1982 Yamaha XJ650L Seca Turbo. She is a product of the Japanese manufacturers effort to produce the best turbo charged super sport touring machine in the early eighties. In our completely biased, et humble opinion, amaha's offering of the Seca was the best air-cooled 4 that the "big 4" of the era produced. Before we digress into name calling and 1/4 mile time comparisons, ets go over some of the specifics of this bike.
History
We took this bike on trade from one of our long time customers who bought it out east somewhere and only had it for about two years. Aside from what he's told us, e don't have much background on the machine. We had it in our "museum" for a year, hen decided to sell it to make room back there. As with all pre-owned bikes, t's undergone a complete service.
The Good

  • Low mileage- The odometer reads 2641 mi
  • The turbo works- Doesn't leak, ets on the boost like she's supposed to.
  • Trans is in tact-Shifts through all 5 speeds without skipping, rinding or anything indicative of loaning this bike to Harley-loving Uncle Charlie who doesn't know any better than to power shift a turbo charged bike. 2nd gear, nlike many of these bikes across the country, s all there.
  • New tires- Just put some new shoes on this puppy, hinko SR-712R'S.
  • Starts and runs well-Our aged Yamaha technicians got their hands into these carbs when we got the bike in. Cleaned out all the ethanol gunk and synchronized them to spec. Battery is brand new, urns over and fires up easily. FYI, wo of our techs have been with us long enough to have worked on these bikes when they were showroom new, o it was in good, earned hands.
  • Paint and body- Are in good condition, o signs of being low-sided, igh-sided, ack-sided or any kind of sided. The paint does look like it's been redone, ut it's darn close to OEM.
  • Fork seals have just been replaced.
  • Seat is perfect
  • Calipers, otors, heels, earings, ear drum, ll in good condition. Front master is good.
  • Wiring is good, ot hacked.
  • The only modification on this bike is a combo compass/clock velcro-ed to the dash.

The Bad

  • The engine does smoke a bit- It's not a bug fogger like valve guide seals or bad rings would produce, ut there is the distinct smell of burning oil while riding. We've taken it on some extended trips, nd it doesn't lose much oil after it warms up.
  • It does leave a nickel sized spot of oil on the ground after riding. It can sit for weeks without leaking at all, ut if you fire it up and take it for a spin, t will leave a slight mark on the ground. We've been unable to locate exactly where its coming from, nd checked all the obvious spots.

The Ugly

  • Paint is flaked off the engine. Call it pitting, all it what you will, ut it's not shiny new.
  • Exhaust headers are a little rusty
  • Paints flaked off the calipers.
  • The bike is a rider, ot a resto, ormal wear for its use, r lack there of.

So there you have it. The bike is a great option for a restoration, r for someone who wants to own a turbo charged Japanese bike as a daily rider. I've tried to be as detailed as possible, ut I'm sure I missed a few things, f you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

The bike is for sale locally, o sale may end without notice.
