I have a 1986 Yamaha Venture Royale XVZ1300 with a 2nd motor. The 2nd motor was a motor I pulled from this bike when I bought it a couple of years back. I believe the engine has a blown head gasket on the front head.
A video walk-around of the bike can be seen here: Walk Around
A video test ride of the bike can be seen here: Test Ride
Motorcycle Description After I bought the bike, replaced the engine with a motor out of a 1987 Yamaha Venture Royale that had about 72,000 miles on it. I put about 26,000 miles on the bike since replacing the motor. The bike is in running/riding condition. I have been using it as a commuter the past 2 summers and have taken it on some short day trips. The most recent was a trip to Sioux City (~200 mile round trip) in mid-August.
The bike has some issues and and they are listed below:
1. Two summers ago, he bike started leaving a blue plume of smoke when leaving stop lights on warmer days or when the bike was warmed up and had been sitting at idle and then I put it under accelerating load. It comes out of the right exhaust pipe and I believe it may be blowing oil past the rings on the front right cylinder when the oil gets thinner when it heats up. I have been putting "No Smoke" in it and it has seemed to alleviate the issue.
2. The bike has an exhaust leak that makes the bike sound louder. I rode this bike to the Outer Banks a couple of years back and on my way through West Virginia, heard the engine pitch change and I believe that is when it happened. There is a manifold that connects to the rear exhaust ports and connects down to the pipes. I believe it might have a split in the seam because I get heat on my legs from both sides, ore on the left than the right. It is nice when the temperatures are cooler, ut on hot days, definitely needed to be wearing jeans since it got pretty hot.
3. It needs both front and rear brake pads. The rear pad brake is starting to grind, he fronts have a little pad left. The rear brakes were worn out a couple of years ago, he rotor appears to be warped, o I replaced it. Although the brake is grinding, he replacement rotor appears to be straight. I kept the original rotor and it goes with the bike.
4. The bike has a small leak just behind the kickstand. When I go to work, may or may not see a small spot at that location. If it is parked for a couple of days, quarter-sized spot shows up.
5. The radio/CB doesn't work. The CB powers on, ut the bike didn't have an antenna when I bought it, o I'm assuming that is the issue.
6. The plastics look good from a distance, get compliments on the bike. Up close, hey are cracked. The plastic trim that supports the air shocks and CB on the right side is cracked, o I removed the CB and bungee corded the air shock adjustment in the pocket on the right side.
7. The right side vent is missing. It is located on the front of the fairing. I have the vent and the ductwork, t is shown in the pictures. I point out the missing vent location is noted on the walk-around video at the 1:55 mark.
8. The cruise worked when I bought it, don't use the cruise on motorcycles typically. When I test rode the bike, checked the cruise, t powered on but wouldn't set. I believe the CB radio needs to be in place for the cruise to work completely, ut I'm not sure. Anyway, t doesn't work as it sits, o it may or may not work if the CB is hooked back up.
9. The horn doesn't work.
10. The windshield is cloudy. It isn't as cloudy as the video appears to show. It is short, o the rider is looking over it as well.
11. The battery is 2 year's old, ut still cranks the bike up. Sometimes when the bike is warmed up, t has to work a little harder, ut when it is cold, t doesn't have any issues.
Second Engine Description The 2nd motor had about 41,000 miles on it when I pulled it. It is the original motor that came with the bike new. When I bought it, t was running on 3 cylinders. The exhaust pipe coming out of the front right cylinder was cold in comparison to the other 3 cylinders. I did some testing and believe it is a head gasket. The engine appeared to be mechanically sound when I pulled the oil pan and valve covers and rotated the engine, verything seemed to be moving as it should. I checked the oil, nd there wasn't any water in it. The previous owner had disconnected the thermostat, hich made me believe it was running hot. I hooked it back up before I pulled the motor and ran it and it appeared the engine was running hotter than the replacement I put in.
Summary I took the bike out on Labor Day and made the test ride video, t was parked after that and prepared for sale, o I won't be riding it during or after this sale. The odometer reads 67,279. The bike has a clean Nebraska title in hand, omes with 3 keys, he original owner's manual, repair manual and a tool kit.
