Description:

Yamaha built the DS7 in 1972 for just one year; it was the fore runner of the seminal RD series. production of which began in 1973. The primary difference between the 250 cc DS7 and 350 cc R5 of 1972 and the 1973 RD250 and RD350 was that the DS7 and R5 utilized piston-port induction. whereas the RDs were introduced with reed valve induction.

This particular machine was built in December of 1971. It is largely complete as can be see from the pictures this bike is in need of cosmetic restoration.

Cosmetic

Cosmetically this motorcycle is in need of restoration. The original paint work is starting to show its age and the tank has two significant dents in the left hand side as can be seen in the pictures. The tank does appear solid and is generally clean internally so it may be possible to have the dents pulled out and save the tank. The oil tank is in good order with the original badge and fitting. the right hand side panel is missing.   The rear mudguard is clean and undamaged it does have some superficial surface rust in the chrome. the front mudguard is damaged at the front again this is visible in the pictures.

The original exhaust system is in generally good order. the left hand silencer has a small dent at the rear. the right hand side is not damaged. both have marks in the original chrome.

The seat is the original item. the cover has some holes and will need replacement. the base is solid and in good order.

Mechanical

We have had the engine fired. but I was not able to get it running when completing the inspection for this description. so please treat this bike as a non runner. The spark appears healthy and the bike has good compression. so we can only think that the issue is either timing or carburetion. On the kick start there are no untoward sounds or indication of mechanical issues. but this check is obviously limited as the engine is not running.

The engine cases are undamaged and generally clean with the exception of some age related marks. The gears select cleanly. the clutch is not freeing. this is common with any machine that has stood. the clutch will need stripping and cleaning to resolve this. in the most extreme case the friction plates may need replacement.

The original air box is fitted. however the connecting rubbers between the carbs and the airbox. the lid and the paper element are missing.

Chassis

The frame is undamaged and in good order; the paint has chips and marks. the swinging arm is in similarly good condition. The swinging arm. headstock and wheel bearings show no signs of excessive play.

On the suspension side the fork stanchions are poor and will need replacement or rechroming. The shock absorbers are also rusty and should be replaced.

The front brake is seized. so will need to be stripped. cleaned and lubricated. the rear brake is working. The front wheel is in clean condition with just minor marks in the chrome. the rear wheel rim does have light surface rust.

The instruments are incorrect Suzuki items.

Electrical

The left hand switch gear is missing the headlight on / off and high / dip switches are missing and the indicators have been removed. the wiring loom appears in generally good order.   The headlight rim is bent; the bucket looks to have escaped any damage.

Summary

This little DS7 has seen better days for sure. but it is largely complete and an original matching numbers bike. these really are very pretty machines with their gold and black paintwork. This bike will make a great basis for a restoration project and it will be very rewarding to return it to the road. As these machines were built for a single year and over the past 42 years many have disappeared these are a very rare sight and a sought after classic motorcycle.
