Description:
While the 1970s was a time of innovation and technical advancement within the Japanese motorcycle industry. Yamaha bucked the trend with the XT500 and turned the clock back and. in doing so. started something really big.
There is something unique about the Yamaha XT500. the basic ?ˆ?no frills?ˆ™ nature of the bike make it a real riders bike and it was at least partially responsible for creating whole new genre of dual sport machines. a genre that still has a strong following today.
The XT is a well balanced easy to handle machine. its light weight makes the thumping big single engine feel far more powerful than the claimed 32bhp at the crank. but this engine is all about the midrange torque. The XT is a very easy bike to ride with good handling. comfortable riding position and the mighty Yam will pull hard in just about any gear anywhere in the rev range. This makes it an ideal machine for conversion to a classic style Super Moto and that is exactly what a previous owner has done with this Particular machine.
Cosmetic
Cosmetically this machine is in good order. The standard alloy tank is finished in the original and instantly recognisable XT500 paint scheme. it has no dents or significant marks or damage. The side panels are both in good order and while original specification we suspect that these have were renewed as part of the conversion. The rear mudguard is also clean and in good order. the front guard is clean and undamaged although there is some paint flaking.
The seat cover is in poor condition with a number of small holes and will need replacement. The exhaust system appears to be the original down pipe with a replacement silencer. The wheels are from a Kawasaki items. although we are not certain of the model. both are in good condition.
Mechanical
We have had the engine fired up and aside from a missing decompressor cable and handlebar lever the bike starts easily and the bike runs well with no untoward noises. The decompressor is still fitted to the engine and works effectively when the lever is pulled by hand.
The engine does smoke on startup and on the over run. although it is very useable. a freshen up of the big singles top end will be required at some point.
We have given the bike a short test ride. the gears select well and the clutch works as it should. once warmed we attempted a restart and again the bike proved easy to start. The engine cases are generally clean with only minor chips and marks in the paint to report. the final drive sprocket cover is missing.
Chassis
The chassis and cycle parts are in good order. as can be seen in the photographs the frame has been refinished in gun metal silver grey. A replacement box section swinging arm has been fitted which suits the style of the machine well.
The front disc brake and rear drum both are both working well. On the suspension side. the fork action is smooth and the damping effective. the rear shocks are very clean and again damping well.
The bike has a replacement pod air filter.
Electrical
The ignition system is working well as we have had the bike running. We have not been able to test the electrics as a new battery is required. the headlight is not working and this will require further investigation. The bike is not fitted with indicators.
The switch gear is fitted and in good order. the bike retains its original instruments these are in good order and working. please note the speedometer is KPH so the recorded mileage is 17. 59.
Summary
This XT represents something a little different and a handsome machine in Super Moto trim; the bike retains a great deal of its original classic style but in a modern form. The hard work of converting the bike and the fitting of the replacement parts is complete and to a good standard. personally I would be tempted to change the style of the personally but as the cover requires attention fitting a reshaped foam would be straightforward.
All in all a very interesting and useable modern twist on a truly classic Japanese thumper.
