Description:

In the 1970?ˆ?s. Yamaha identified that despite producing three distinct off road motorcycles nothing really existed on the market for the serious Enduro rider. Yamaha began development of the IT range to fill this gap in the market. the first of these machines was the IT400C released in 1976. In 1983 Yamaha introduced the most legendary of all IT?ˆ™s. the IT490K.

The IT490K is unquestionably the most memorable of the IT models. the numbers ?ˆ?490?ˆ™ would be firmly imprinted in people?ˆ™s memories. The 1983 models were also restyled with a less rounded and more boxy appearance than their predecessors and the IT250K and IT490K sporting an updated mono-cross rear suspension.

This particular machine is 1983 IT490 K model. while this bike has definitely been used. it has also been subject to some level of restoration. As can be seen from the photographs this machine is in good order particularly for a 35 year old Motocross machine. the bike starts. runs and rides well.

Cosmetic

The original plastic tank has been refinished with paint we assume that this must be acrylic or something similar. it did give a good finish but has started to bubble in a number of places. In one area on the front the tank has been repaired but this is weeping so the tank will need to be lined or a replacement sourced. The graphic on the left hand side is missing and the one on the right hand side is lifting.

The side panels are in good order. the only fault being a small split at the rear mounting bolt which can be seen in the photographs. The rear mudguard is in good clean condition. the tool bag is missing. the front mudguard has also been refinished it is in good shape with just some chips and marks.

The seat cover is in good condition with no damage to report.

The exhaust has seen some repair to the downpipe and some gasket sealant at the top which could be tidied up. there also a couple of dents in the expansion chamber. these are clearly visible in the photographs.

Mechanical

We have fired this beastie up and the engine sounds great with no signs of any issues. we have also given the bike a short test ride and the gears all select well.

The original air box is fitted it is in good functional condition but does have some heat damage.

There are no identified mechanical issues in the drive train.

Chassis

The frame  paint is in good shape. especially for an Enduro machine. although it does have some chips and marks. the only point of note is that the rear loop which holds the mudguard has been damaged in the past and has a welded repair. give the nature of the bike it has almost certainly been flipped at some point in its life. The swinging arm is in good condition it is missing the chain protection plastics and as a result there has been some chain rubbing.

On the suspension side the fork action smooth and damping effective we have lifted the gaiters and the forks are clean and the seals tight. The rear shock absorber is also working effectively.

The front and rear brakes are both working well.

The wheels are both in good condition; however a can be seen from the photograph the rims are mismatched. the rear is a polished Takasago rim. the front is what we believe to be the original DID. both are alloy and it is really just the polished finish of the Takasago that makes this noticeable.

Electrical

The bike is fitted with a headlight but this is not currently connected nor is there any switch gear there is no rear light or instrument

Summary

This is a clean. original example of a 31 year old Enduro machine. This iconic big Yamaha is good rideable condition the engine sounds very good and there are no signs of any mechanical issues. Cosmetically there are a couple of issues but nothing significant and if the bike is to be used in anger it will need very little work.
