Hot on the heels of Yamaha’s Triple-powered FZ-07. the Tuning Fork brand offers an even more affordable version. The FZ-07 is built for would-be motorcyclists searching for their first full-sized motorcycle. positioning it well below similar sized machines from other brands. No doubt. Yamaha’s new Triple is expensive to manufacture. So because of its price point. the FZ-07 is powered by a water-cooled and fuel-injected 689cc Parallel Twin. The engine features an eight-valve. dual overhead camshaft-head. and what’s becoming signature for Yamaha street and sportbikes: its crossplane firing order. It sips fuel from a 3. 7-gallon fuel tank and exhaust is pumped out via a clean-looking underbelly pipe. Yamaha rates the engine at 74 horsepower with 50 ft-lb of torque and claims it’s capable of delivering 58 mpg. The engine is hung inside a blacked-out steel frame that uses it as a stressed component for improved handling. Suspension is comprised of a non-adjustable telescopic fork and spring preload-adjustable horizontally mounted hydraulic shock with 5. 1-inches of travel at each end. Power is put to the ground through a six-speed transmission and lightweight chain final drive. It rolls on a pair of 10-spoke cast aluminum rims shod with 600cc Supersport-sized Bridgestone tires (120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 rear). Braking hard parts are comprised of a pair of 282mm wave-style and cross-drilled discs clamped hydraulically by four-piston calipers with a solo 245mm disc and caliper out back. Yamaha says the FZ-07 is 17 pounds lighter than its big brother. with a fully-fueled curb weight of 397 pounds. It also sports a low and rider-friendly 31. 7-inch seat height. An all-digital LCD serves as instrumentation and includes a bar-graph style tachometer. gear position indicator. fuel. and consumption information. in addition to dual trip meters and a speedometer. The motorcycle will be arriving in U. S. dealers this July.
