BSA D1 BANTAM 1949

 Lovely looking early Bantam which was completely rebuilt a couple of years ago . My son used it to accompany me to a couple of local shows last year and it was much admired. I would say it has not been over restored . using as many of the original parts as possible. Having said that it does benefit from new tyres and tubes. cables. drive chain. ignition coil . points and condenser. complete rewire and exhaust pipe . Silencer is original and very solid. I cleaned it thoroughly but could not find a plater who would chrome  it so is painted heat resistant aluminium. The eagle eyed among you will have spotted that the photos show the bike with the old pipe which has since been replaced with the new one. I bought this bike in 1977 and it spent a lot of time in various garages until a couple of years ago. The engine was completely rebuilt with new big-end just after I bought it. all greased up and dry stored until a couple of years ago when I got round to doing the cycle parts. I re-stripped the engine at this point to change the crankshaft seals which I figured would have hardened . The headlamp is the original spun aluminium item . operated by a handlebar  lever and bowden cable. Inside is a facility for a dry cell battery to illuminate the pilot bulb for use when parked( a legal requirement in 1949 I believe). Because of acid leakage from the battery many of these aluminium shells badly corroded and were replaced with steel items with the switch in the lamp. Another nice period touch is the gear indicator on the chainguard although not recommended to be used whilst in motion!V5 and old green log book both in my name. Transferable number .
