 1979 Yamaha SR500 ?ˆ“ Custom Caf?© Racer
Last year my custom Bonneville came second in the MCN ?ˆ?Built in Britain?ˆ? competition. so for this year?ˆ™s competition I decided to build a custom SR500 caf?© racer?ˆ¦ only to find out that they are not running the competition this year!! Hence why here?ˆ™s the completed project now up for sale.
I bought it in February this year as a partially completed project. where the previous owner had had the engine and carb professionally overhauled (have no paper work to prove this but have no reason to doubt him and I checked the cylinder compression and get 9. 0:1 as stated in the manual. also opened the carb and there are all new seals). Since then I have done a complete nut and bolt rebuild with every part either overhauled. replaced. polished or repainted.
Only done 60 miles since rebuild.
The following work was carried out:
- Complete professional re-spray
- Wheels refurbished (new spokes and rims)
- New rear shocks
- Front forks overhauled (all new seals and oil)
- New front brake callipers. pads and stainless steel braided hose lines
- Modified front and rear mudguards
- New front headlight and mounting brackets
- Custom tail light
- Oberon LED front and rear indicators
- Oberon bar end mirrors
- Rizoma billet grips
- Billet clip-on handle bars
- New front brake fluid reservoir
- New ignition switch. speedo. rev counter and warning light unit
- New petrol tank cap
- Billet oil tank cap
- Modified the frame and removed the side covers. air box and any other brackets not required.
- New swing arm seals
- Slash cut side exhaust (AWSOME thumper sound! ?ˆ“ a more sedate slip-on silencer supplied as well for MOT time).
- K&N air filter
- K&N sump breather
- K&N oil filter (and oil obviously)
- Iridium spark plug
- Highly polished engine covers
- Caf?© racer single seat unit with custom seat pad (air vent fitted to cool electrics now located under seat hump)
- Custom made undertray
- Custom made chain guard (not shown in photos)
- New chain and sprockets
- All new cables (clutch. decompression. speedo. rev counter and throttle)
- Custom show number plate (standard plate supplied for MOT time)
Â
Additional extras above standard:
- Converted the front brakes from single to twin discs. As you can imagine with twice the standard braking capacity. the brakes are now excellent and way better than standard.
- Fitted a stunning billet engine oil cooler that I ordered in from the States. The standard engine was known to overheat in certain conditions. which this now eliminates.
- Fitted a heavy duty front fork brace that I ordered in from Germany. This stiffens up the whole front end considerably.
- Relocated all electrical components under the solo seat hump and had the bike completely professionally rewired by ?ˆ?Ferret?ˆ? (at a cost of £1000!). with many new components including a battery eliminator kit.
(Note: as the bike is a ?ˆ?kick start?ˆ? model only. a battery is not essentially required and can be removed).
 Other Features:
- V5 document in my name (matching frame and engine numbers)
- HPI and Insurance clear
- MOT till August 2015
- Road Tax till end of January 2015
- Newish tyres (loads of life left)
Â
Note: The only blemishes I am aware of are:
- A small crack on either side edge of the seat unit. where on it?ˆ™s maiden run to the MOT garage I went over a pothole with the rear preload not set stiff enough. This caused the wheel to hit the underside of the undertray and crack the edges of the seat unit. NOTE: If the bike sells then I will arrange to have the seat professionally repaired and sprayed before delivery - this will obviously take around a week to complete.
- The bike starts and runs fine. but it tends to flood very easily when using the manual choke. I just never use the choke which is fine. but if I was keeping it. I would get the carb jetting professionally checked.
Â
Price: £4. 50 (sorry no offers. at this price I?ˆ™m losing a lot of money on it and that?ˆ™s not taking into account the hundreds on manhours I?ˆ™ve put into it). If it does?ˆ™nt sell for this price. then I?ˆ™m more than happy to keep it in my collection.
