Description

1970 Benelli Volcano 180 cc. This bike came from an old Benelli dealer in Penn state and was never sold until I bought it in 1994. It was rode just a mile in a field by the dealer's kids when he was away on a business trip. The kids dumped it twice and put 3 very small dings in the tank about the size of a pencil eraser or less that are not very deep or very noticable along with a few scratches in the paint. It then got scratched several more times on the forks. headlight ears and one side on the lower swing arm kickstand etc. by the bone head shipper that neglected to pad the boards it was held in place by in the crate when I had it shipped from the old dealer to me. The paint still looks nice and it would be an easy re-paint or touch up job if desired. It has just 10 miles on it now from going to several shows and 4th of July parades over the years. Tips are still on the original tires as well as the Pirelli stickers. Rim paint has just a few specks of rust but very nice. It has practically no scratches in the engine cases or to the chrome parts. The bike looks a lot better than my pictures show and its a bit dusty and could use a little cleaning but basically still looks like a new scratch and dent bike that it is. I noticed finger prints on the tank after I took the pictures. But the bike is very nice and can be cleaned up some more.

I have never started it and its always been kept in the house. The engine turns over fine with a ton of compression and I am sure will fire right up. The seat does not even have squash lines from being sat on and looks super nice. There are no cuts or rips. There is a spot about the size of a dime or smaller on one side towards the rear that looks like old glue. The header pipe is not even blued by the exhaust port. Tank emblems. point cover emblem and tool box are about as mint as you will ever see. The tank emblems were loose and need to be re-glued so I took them off. They are quite mint and easy to put back on. It also has the original very rare orange stripe owners manual. I have only ever seen two of them. Also has tool kit and bag: bag has some age wear but is in decent shape. Volcano case decals were faded and wrinkled so I removed them. However. I have a NOS. original set of Volcano decals I got from Cosmo Motors years ago to go with the bike and they are super nice. Bike also has rare Cosmo accessory side reflectors front and rear that I installed. The old dealer I bought it from added an extra kill switch on the right for extra safety as he was going to ride the bike on the road but never did. I have the ground strap to go with the bike to put back on for the front brake stop light if desired. The steering lock key is missing but I am sure the lock can be changed.

One side of the tank has discoloration in the middle. This happened when someone I paid to detail the bike did not know what he was doing. I got a lot of it out and buffing with the right compound may remove the rest but its not to bad. I checked on doing a re-plate of the tank and most run 200-300. Re-painting the frame would also be pretty cheap but then again it almost looks too nice to mess with perhaps just touch it up if you are going to ride it. The engine. the rubber and rest of the parts on the bike need basically nothing. There are three small bubble spots on the muffler 2 on top and one on the bottom that are not in a very visible place (see pics) but muffler is still way too nice to re-plate.

I don't know where you would find a Volcano with more potential to be a number one or very close bike when it comes to the seat. emblems and an engine that is still very new plus the fact all rare Volcano only parts are all intact right down to the original rubber tip and the luggage rack. I am quite sure you can spend much more than my reserve price on one needing a complete restoration that may not be as nice when finished.

Cosmopolitan Motors was the distributer for the Benelli Volcano. They were only produced for one year in 1970 with the unsold ones having stickers on the tanks to change the year and sell them off through 1974 which is the tag year on this bike. Since they were $509. 00 they appear to have been the most expensive minicycle of the time. They were offered with an unheard of 25 month warranty. They were advertised as the world's most powerful minicycle. They are a four speed clutch that produces 14 h. p. at the rear wheel. They have a ton of big motorcycle options (see ad picture. included).

I never lost a race on my rider Volcano against anything its size and beat several larger bikes including a almost new 1973 Speedway Super Spyder with 125cc Sachs engine. The Volcano made the Speedway Spyder look slow. I have owned hundreds of vintage minibikes and minicycles and there is next to nothing that comes close to the power. speed and unreal craftsmanship in a bike of its size. Remember Benelli also used it own engines not like the lawnmower powered minibikes and they were bullet proof. To me the Volcano has always been the Ferrari of minicycles.

Also included is a copy of the article in 1971 Hot Rod magazine featuring the Benelli Volcano and they mention speeds over 65 mph. They also mention an optional stinger pipe that boosted the horsepower at the rear wheel to 17 hp but I have never seen or heard of such a pipe unless it's something someone made. I can't imagine that since they are ungodly scary with the stock pipe and I covered my two acre front yard in just a few seconds on my old rider Volcano. The Benelli Volcano was born to run! There is still time to put it under your tree! Best wishes.
