Vintage 1948 Handy Scooter. cherished registration For sale is an interesting home constructed motorcycle runabout dating from 1948. It was first registered in June of that year. The original buff log book. which comes with the bike. lists the machine to be of ?ˆ?HOME CONSTRUCTION?ˆ™ and describes the machine as a HANDY. Not certain who built it. but the first recorded owner was a lady living in Fishponds. Bristol. who kept it for 5 years. The second owner. also of Fishponds. kept it for 6 years. The third owner appears to have used it very little as it was last registered for road use in 1959. He did however retain the bike until last year. It was next acquired by a friend. He had hoped to do it up to return to the road but sadly passed away before this was possible. I am selling the bike for his partner. The black and white photograph dates. I believe. from about 1960 and shows the machine in its original form. The engine is a Villiers Junior as fitted to auto-cycles and the tank would appear to date back to the late vintage period. it is possibly Royal Enfield. Unfortunately over the years the bike has been separated from its original engine and tank. The engine now fitted is an Excelsior Goblin engine. also of the type fitted to auto-cycles. Unlike the original engine. which was single speed. the Goblin has an integral two-speed gearbox. The gear-change lever is handlebar mounted. The fuel tank. which comes with the bike. is approximately the right style but will need slight modification for mounting. It is fitted with small diameter wheels and 400 x 8 tyres. Both wheels are braked. This is an interesting machine and worthy of preservation. The V5C registration document comes with the machine. The registration number is quite valuable and is transferable. This should be a fun machine for riding to the shops or for use as a paddock runabout. It is part of the history of motorcycling in this country and dates from the post war period when new machines were in very short supply. The machine is very simple and little work should be required to return to the road or to carry out a full restoration. The main items missing are brake pedal. kick-start lever. pedals. exhaust. chain. chain-guard. plus control cables; these should cause no problems in sourcing. I will be pleased to answer questions. but am unlikely to be able to add much to what has been written above. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has memories of the machine. For collection only please. with payment in cash upon collection.
