Description

I am offering my 1987 Can-Am 500 ASE number 021. Build date is 12/86. This is a low production bike. All Can-Ams were assembled by Armstrong in England after 1983. There are no hard production numbers but it is believed around 200 units of each model were produced in 1987.
This is the second 1987 500 I've owned. After crashing my 1984 500ASEI purchased my first 1987 out of the crate atMOM'S in Manchester NH. The dealership scooped up a significant amount of the final year bikes. According to the Dealership they had the most 1987 models on the East Coast. I believe this is why New England seems to have a large amount of these bikes.
I sold my first bike in the late 1990's. I purchased this bike ten minutes from my home about 8 years ago. Since owning I've maybe burnt a tank of fuel through it. My rides consisted of terrorizing my neighbors on our private road, round my property and sneaking out on the designated snowmobile trail at the edge of my property.
I put the bike into my dry basement 6 years ago. I realize I will never use it and should be offered to a Can-Am Enthusiast. I pulled it out of the basement this weekend.
The bike has a NH Recreation Sticker from 2002. All indicators point this to be a low hour bike that wasn't abused. NH is known as the granite state and the trails are notorious for chewing up tires, rims and damaging frames. This bike looks like it was spared the abuse.
From the front. The Metzler tire has a coupleof one inch sidewall splits. The rim is in GREAT condition with no dings. The wheel bearings are tight. The bottom of the forks show no rock damage. Front brake works but new owner will have to flush the system of old brake fluid. Fork boots were added by the previous owner. A Replacement fender added.Has the original head light. The handlebars are most likelynon-original because they are suppose to be white. Controls seem to be original. Missing the odometer. The heavy duty bracket is there.
The tank is nice with asome lightscratches that could be easily removed. Has can-am tank badges. Tank is not sun faded. Have 2 new seat covers for the bike. Iripped the first one and put a few more staples to use the cover for demonstrative proposes. I did not want to attempt mounting the second one. New owner should bring the second cover and seat to an upholstery shop or be more patient than I was. New replacement rear fender added to the bike. There is no tail light but wiring is there. I left tail light choice for the new owner. The sidepanels are not sun faded or cracked. I removed side panel stickers with black/white numbers. I ordered new side panel stickers but noticed yesterday they were wrong. The correct ones will be included in the sale.
Study the pics of the engine. As best as you can tellthe top end hasnever been opened. All head bolts look untouched. Looks like a replacement clutch cover gasket was added. There is no head fin damage or case damage. Looks like previous owner was sealing all inlets to the cases with RVT to keep dry. Shift splines and kick start splines are good. No kick start issues either.I installed a new air cleaner. It will need to be oiled.Pipe is solid witha couple dingswhich I will try to show in the picks. The silencer is MSRand should be the original.
Under side of the frame has a couple of very minor dings. I probably put one under the bike putting the bike down my bulkhead to the basement. The original shock is there and has damping. The swingarm bushings are tight and rear wheel bearing are the same. The rear tire is an almost new Millville. The rear rim is in excellent shape.. Chain and sprockets have a season or 2 use left. The side stand and mount are straight and tight,
I forgot to mention a SPARE ENGINE!! It is seized but is complete minus stator, lywheel and cover. Has the carb. The splines look good. It is extremely difficult to find an engine. There were a portion of thesebikes that had their engines removed for cart racing.
This bike will be sold with a NH registration and a bill of sale. NH does not issue titles after 15 yrs. These documents will produce a title and registration in any state.
I know this is a long winded ad. I am trying to provide as much detail as possible. I took pics with all plastic off for closer inspection. Any questions please ask.
Now the details. International bidders are fine. You have to follow the same payments schedule as local bidders. $250 non-refundable deposit within 48hrs and the balance due in 7 days.
