Whether you want to restore it to it's original beauty or whether you like the patina look (and this one does have a "look" lol) and just want a Rat Rod project. This is a great starter. VIN number is CL77-1037413Engine Number is CL77E-1037434This VIN designates it as a Honda CL Scrambler 305. I am not a motorcycle guru. so I am putting the information out that is to the best of my ability. Please correct me if I am wrong. This one was modified to be a "chopper". and my guess repainted since original Scramblers had silver tanks. This frame and tank is a metal flake greenThey were made 1965 -1967 but last produced 1967's were licensed as 1968's. Since they don't have VIN decoders from these years. My best guess this motorcylce is a 1967. I am guessing it because the Bates Headlight housing has "67" on it. there is nothing else that I can find on the motorcycle that will give me more information than that. There is no title. The motorcycle doesn't run. it is a project to restore. As you can tell by the pics. it is a barn find. we didn't do anything to fix it up or change it. so if you are going to do a restoration or rat rod. You have great "before" pics! lolThe Odometer. Honda finally decided there was an American market for a 305cc scrambler. Cycle World immediately tested the bike and liked it. even through it was not the production racer they had hoped for. Cycle World referred to the CL77 as a “gentleman’s scrambler. stating. “It is. in fact. the appeal of scrambler-type styling that sells the CL77. ” Period testers found the CL to be too heavy for competition and not as fast as the CB. but perfectly adequate for both offroad fun and reliably getting to work. The four-stroke engine was almost identical to that used in the CB77 Super Hawk. with the same aluminum cases and chain-driven overhead cam. A lower compression ratio to aid low rpm power was allied to long. upswept pipes to assist ground clearance. and reliability was ensured by full-flow oil filtration. Later models of the Honda CL77 (which this is. ) got bigger front and rear brakes and a better muffler. but not a whole lot of other changes. The bike was a best seller as it was. and Honda didn’t want to mess with success until it had a worthy successor. The last CL77s were built in 1967. although. as was common at the time. some CL77s were registered in 1968 and titled as 1968 models. By then. Honda had introduced the new 325cc CB350. including a scrambler version. the CL350.
