Description

I am selling my restored 1969 Honda CB750 Sandcast. Frame #1378 Engine #1629. This is a concourse restoration. Worthy of shows a museum or your living room. It took me two years to track down the correct parts and restore this bike. It was recently shown at the 2015 Quail Motorcycle Gathering.

Here’s the full story on every part of this bike…

I found the bike as an abandoned chopper in Danville CA. It took me just under two years to completely restore it. Frame #1378 engine #1629. I spared no expense on this bike and it shows.

Engine and Exhaust

I disassembled the engine completely and had the cylinders bored to the first oversize per Honda's specifications (.25; still lots of life left!). I replaced the pistons rings crankshaft bearings primary chains cam chain cam chain tensioner oil seals and gaskets in the engine. I bead blasted the engine cases cylinders head and cam shaft adjuster. I then painted them with correct high-heat engine paint and baked them for 25 minutes. I removed the clear coating from the engine covers polished them and painted them with a high-heat clear engine paint. I of course also painted the Honda logo background on the alternator cover with the correct black paint. Before reassembling the engine I checked each component and replaced a few that were out of spec (the kickstart shaft and spring for example). The round oil filter cover is a Yamiya replica. New clutch plates and springs. Original "no crimping" oil lines (very rare).

The original “fat” exhaust clamps were re-chromed. New Yamiya “No-Number” exhaust pipes were fitted. They are perfect! Beautiful Yamiya heat shields were also fitted.

Frame and Suspension

It took a year to find a correct frame (it must be within 300 of the engine during the sandcast era). Once I found the frame I performed a few repairs sandblasted it and painted it with the correct semi-gloss paint. Same with the swingarm.

I stripped the forks polished them like the engine covers and coated them in clear paint. I replaced the fork tubes and seals. I purchased Yamiya replacement shocks (made by the same company that made them in 1969).

All correct “8” bolts were re-zinced professionally and yellow chromate was applied to the bolts that should have it (the three bolts that hold the oil tank and the four washers that hold the battery box for example). Missing “8” bolts were replaced with correct replicas.

Electrical Instruments and Controls

I bought a new Honda harness and points plate. The rectifier and rectifier were restored.

The instruments were disassembled and lubricated. I was able to keep the original dial faces and jewels (very rare). I replaced the housing with top-of-the-line replicas made in Denmark. The top triple tree was refinished in the correct matte black.

The left and right hand controls are NOS (purchased from a well-known master restorer). The master cylinder (correct with its fill line) was stripped and re-anodized in the correct “chromic” method (not like modern anodizing…took a while to find someone who could do it right). Turned out to be a perfect match to the NOS controls! New OEM levers and cables were used (including the correct rubber tips on the levers).

Original handle bars. OEM mirrors.

New maintenance free battery.

Carbs

The carbs were completely disassembled and cleaned. Parts were sent off to be re-zinced. Brand new jets gaskets and fuel stops were installed to the original factory settings. New OEM carbs boots velocity stacks and carb bands were used.

Wheels & Brakes

The hubs were polished to the correct amount and sealed in the correct clear paint. New zinc spokes were used with the correct yellow-zinc spoke nipples. The rims were re-chromed (both are original rims). The rear rim is the correct “rolled” type. Beautiful wheels!

The original 45 tooth sprocket was re-zinced.

The front brake rotor was resurfaced and refinished.

I imported the correct Dunlop tires from Japan (not cheap!). F6 in the front and K87 in the back.

The correct “Tokico 1” front brake was refinished and new brake pads and seals were installed. The correct caliper bolts were re-zinced. New OEM brake lines were installed (the originals were leaking).

The correct front “double-cut” front fender was repaired and re-chromed. The rear fender is a perfect Yamiya replica. Very expensive; they are beautiful!

New DID chain.

Bodywork and Seat

The original headlight bucket fork ears and correct 17L wrinkle tank were refinished in beautiful candy ruby red paint with the correct decal stripe (applied between multiple layers of clear coats). The air box and side covers are Yamiya reproductions and were painted at the same time to perfectly match the other pieces. The side emblems are beautiful replicas. The tank emblems were refinished. New air filter. New OEM petcock.

It should be mentioned that I did the paint four times before I felt that it was accurate. Very tricky to get the right granularity in the metallic base coat and even tougher to get the candy coat correct. The kits you can buy online are crap! I ended up buying a tank with original candy ruby red paint on it to use as a guide so my paint supplier could find a good match. Paint is top-of-the-line House of Kolor.

The original seat pan was stripped and painted in correct semi-gloss black. Yamiya red foam and seat cover were used to complete the seat. I’ve compared it to original seats and it is perfect!

I documented the restoration process extensively. I even took photos along the way. You can see pictures of the restoration process here.

The bike is for sale locally so I reserve the right to end the auction early.

I am happy to work with your shipper but it is up to you to set everything up. I’m happy to answer any questions.

Some additional info... This bike did not have the "28" caps on the carbs when I got the bike. It has the 6mm replacements that Honda issued in 1969. I elected not to put reproduction caps on the bike; best to keep it original.

A bit more on the wrinkle tank...I had the rust professionally removed from the inside of the tank. It was then tested for any leaks (none) and sealed with POR15 tank liner so you will never need to worry about rust again. This stuff is great. Stronger than anything else on themarket and silver in color. Not white or red like some competing products.
