1983 Honda Nighthawk cb550sc
I bought this bike from an Iowa farm kid in 2000. At that time it had 23204 original miles on it. The knob to set the trip odometer was broken off so I bought a good used set of gauges off of EBay and installed them. I DO have the original gauges but can't locate them to include with the other parts (see pic of parts) but when I run across them (if I do) I'll send them to the winning bidder along with the other parts.
The bike wasn't running, adn't been running for about 8 years at the time, eaked oil just sittin' there, ad 4-1 exhaust (robbing it of major HP if it HAD been running...the original 2X2 to 1 was LONG GONE), n old beat up fairing, otor seized up, nd lots more wrong with it so I trailered it back to Tulsa and in my spare time I rebuilt the motor (new rings, earings, tc.), ebuilt the carbs, eplaced the plugs, sed original stock wiring harness and it has run like a top all these years. I'm a tinkerer, estoring these old pieces of history. It now needs work. It will run in choke but not without choke or under a load. The carbs once again need to be rebuilt and adjusted. It's smoking a bit but that is probably due to the carbs needing attention. I replaced the front brake discs about 1000 miles back but the rear brake shoes are rather thin so probably in 500 miles or so they'll need being replaced (I have included new shoes for the rear brakes in the parts list).
If you're a tinkerer like me and you enjoy getting these historic bikes (yes this is an historic bike. I'm told Honda made the Nighthawk with the 550 motor for only one year...1983...so they are getting harder to find, sp. in numbers matching condition like this one) back on the road runnin strong, hen this is your baby!
If you're interested in this one and you buy it DONT PART IT OUT!!! You could make a lot of money parting this jewel out but it's history. Don't do it. Restore it like I did in 2000. The only reason I'm not puttingthe little bit of work into this to get it rideable again is because I have a 1995 VT1100 Honda Shadow and a 1948 Indian to get to. Otherwise I'd keep this and put alittle time and money back into it and get it back on the road. The wife says something has to go cuz she has a hard time getting her car in our 3 car garage! This IS NOT A NEW BIKE. IT'S A TINKERER'S BIKE!!!!
Now what I've done within the last coupla years to her:
New recovered seat-I stripped it down to the skeleton and redid it.
Painted the tank and replaced the tank badges then clear coated it-that was about 8 months ago. I see in the pics there's just a slight irregularity on the top left side of the tank starting to raise up. I'd re-blast, rime and paint, eplace the badges and then clear coat just like I did. It doesn't need that for 2-3 riding seasons though. If I kept her I'd do it this winter because I'm anally retentive and take good care of my rides. Besides, hot lookin ride says a lot about the rider!
New plugs about 2 months ago when she started acting up. Obviously it's the carbs but she has new plugs. Do the carbs and I believe you'll be set.
I also have included a lot of parts and literature. Here's a partial list (see pics):
New black handlebars. It was running so good up until a coupla months ago I didn't want to take the time to break it down and put 'em on. They're black, ot chrome so they'll look alittle more stealth I think.
The old petcock-buy a rebuild kit off of EBay for a few bucks, ebuild it and you'll have a spare. The petcock on it is new. This old one began leaking last March so I just bought a new one and threw it on...it was just a 10 minute fix so now you have a new one on the bike and when you rebuild it you'll have this spare
New replacement front left turn signal. Again, was riding it so didn't replace the broken one. The broken one works but like I said, 'm anally retentive but with 2 other bikes I'm working on I never got to it. I just checked and I have 2 new blinkers so again, ou'll have a spare.
Lots of other parts/literature.
Again, his is a tinkerer's bike. From time to time you'll have to work on it more often than a new bike, o keep it running. But when she's running she's a brute!
