HOW THE MOTORCYCLE WAS USED:
Original Owner: Rode the moto approximately 2,500 miles per year for 6 years. He rode around Washington and Oregon states for pleasure with his motorcycle club during the spring and summer. The motorcycle was stored inside and covered with a felt underlayment (included in the sale). All service was performed at the Honda dealership. A new Honda battery was installed in 2013. All accessories were professionally installed by the dealership.
My Ownership: Rode the moto approximately 500 miles per year for 3 years. I bought from Tampa, lorida and had it shipped by Federated Van Lines to my summer home in Glenville, North Carolina. It is stored in my garage there with felt underlayment topped with a fitted dust cover (see photos), nd attached to a low voltage (1.25 amp) battery maintainer when not in use (see photos). To protect the tires when I leave for the winter, he bike is placed on the center stand raising the rear tire off the floor and wood chocks are added to lift the front tire (see photos). I purchased the Honda Service Manual as I prefer to do my own service work. The brakes were bled and the coolant was changed using Honda products in May 2014. The oil/filter change done by Honda in Portland from January 2013 remains within the service interval guideline.
WHY THIS SERIES:
As the owner of a 66’ Super Hawk, 2’ SuperSport, nd 79’ GL 1000, judge that the ST model with ABS and in the right color (Silver), ill become a collectible classic in the near future. Of the many motorcycles I have owned since 1963, onda motos (given the right model and color) have best increased in value over time.
Regardless of future value, he ST is the perfect Sports Tourer for today. Before deciding on which tourer to buy, researched and sampled the Kawasaki and Yamaha offerings. I found the Honda was superior in quality, unction, nd appearance.
Unfortunately, onda made the corporate decision to stop ST production and concentrate on the GoldWing for touring. The Sport Touring market is smaller and focused on riders who appreciate the lighter and more nimble Sport model over the heavy Touring bikes.
WHY THIS PARTICULAR MOTORCYCLE:
After months of looking for the right ST, found this perfect one in Oregon. The original owner wanted to know why I would want to buy his motorcycle from across the country when I could likely find one closer to Florida.
It had to have ABS and I did travel around Florida to see several ST’s, ut none were just right. This one came from a discerning owner who added the right equipment to make it unique, ad low miles, as in perfect condition in the right color (notice that all ST1300 ads and brochures pictured it in silver) with only minor scratches, nd was maintained by the book. Note: the cost of enclosed shipping by a reputable carrier (Federated Van Lines) was $750 diagonally across the country from OR to NC.
The unique solo seating is appealing and comfortable. It sets this bike well apart from other ST1300s. The heated seat is a joy on colder days. It retains the 3 position (up/down) adjustments found on the manufacturer’s double seat. Note: the original Honda dual seat is included in unused perfect condition. Furthermore, Pirate’s Lair rear backrest (Note: I bought this with the intention of riding the moto from Oregon with my daughter, ut shipped it instead) is included for passenger comfort (see photos). Note: an auxiliary 12v DC power outlet is found between the fuel tank and front of seat (an unobtrusive and functional position). It is used to power heated clothing and gloves. Note: another 12v DC outlet (latched/waterproof) is found on the L side of fairing to power radar detector and GPS if needed. It can be used to supply current from a battery maintainer to keep the battery whole.
The stylish Smuggler trunk is well integrated with the Corbin seat and provides easily accessed and lockable storage for valuables (additional lockable storage is also available on the L fairing compartment).
The small OXIO rear trunk on the back platform looks much better than the typical, arge rear trunks normally added to these bikes. It is well made with multiple zippered compartments for tools and emergency things needed on the road. Note: smuggler trunk and rear trunk are color matched to the rest of the moto color in silver.
The CE Bailey windshield (a manufacturer of aircraft quality windshields) is the vented version. It provides better flow than the original, nd retains the factory, otor-driven cockpit control for up/down windshield function. Note: the original factory windshield is included in unused, erfect condition (see photos).
The original owner added chrome side and center stands (see photos). They retain their intended function and are beautiful as well. The original owner also added chrome hoops to protect the hard bags and aid in passenger comfort (see photos – they look right).
TESTIMONIAL: to inform how competent this motorcycle can be in adverse conditions
At the beginning spring time after taking delivery, took the ST for an hour long ride to Asheville. Unseasonable, ight snow began to fall as I left Sapphire Valley and figured correctly that it would stop at lower elevations. The ST kept me dry and warm (with heated jacket and gloves carried in the hard bags) so I motored on. It was dusk upon my return, aking a different route home a light drizzle turned into rain.
Interstate 40 west of Asheville has sharp curves as elevation increases. The speed limit drops from 65 mph down to 50 mph with many semi trucks traveling towards Knoxville TN. Due to the spray of water from the eighteen wheelers, could not see anything around the curves so I hit up to 80-90 mph to lessen the time of zero visibility when running alongside the trucks. The ST handled perfectly under those conditions with smooth acceleration and stable, igh speed cornering. My core body and hands remained warm with the heated jacked and heated gloves. The ST lighting with the Sylvania bulbs was wonderful - I increased the headlight pitch a few degrees upward and brought up the windshield from the cockpit to better light and see the road at these high speeds when the rain fell in earnest.
I specifically sought the ABS model (never had this system on a motorcycle, ut ABS saved me in a car), nd was justified in this because suddenly there appeared a van obscured by the rain, reeping along alongside the caravan of semis in the fast lane. The anti-lock brakes activated with and the Michelin tires functioned perfectly to cut my speed significantly without skidding.
Well and good, ut I missed my exit, inding myself on the road to Tennessee with no exits going through tunnels up through the mountains. After some time, chanced upon a lonely, ark exit and turned around before reaching the Knoxville. The GPS showed an alternate route taking country roads home to Glenville. The going was unfamiliar but less harrowing at lower speeds. The suspension soaked up the friendless roads with aplomb and the Pilot Sport tires gripped the broken, et pavement perfectly.
Consider how safe and easy this motorcycle is since other than test rides, had no prior experience with a large motorcycle and had not risked riding in such perilous conditions since my youth.
Summary: A fully optioned and accessorized Sport Tourer of the highest degree with the best color combination in exceptional condition with very low mileage, hich needs nothing for years to come and will appreciate in value.
BTW: if this auction does not meet the minimum, easonable reserve price, nother opportunity will follow as the accessories will come off to be sold individually, nd the price will be significantly less (about $2k). It will be in pure stock configuration like others, ot glamorous and unique – nothing wrong with that.
Faults: a hairline windshield crack approx. 1” (if troublesome, he original Honda windshield can be easily substituted), 0.5” scratch on the lower fairing, nd slight scratch on the L mirror housing. Some items on the shelf above the moto fell during a minor tremor we had in the mountains a couple of seasons ago. I prefer originality over touch up. See “faults” photo folder in Picasa for full documentation.
Ship Motorcycle or Pickup in Asheville airport (AVL): With cash in hand or after your check clears my bank (see pickup/shipping terms for cash or check payment options), can deliver the moto to the airport (Glenville is one hour away). The transaction can take place there so you can enjoy the Smokey Mountains, lue Ridge Mountains, ail of the Dragon, tc, n your trip home. The ST is ready to ride anywhere. Note: the original parts and manual can be shipped at your expense for a fee.
