Here's a great start for a MiniTrail restoration! Found recently at a Nebraska farm sale. it has been in a dry barn for over twenty years and never developed the rust so common to Mid-West and Eastern bikes. It is largely complete. missing only easily-found bits and pieces--most available as reproductions. It took me five minutes to determine it had spark. shoot starting fluid into the carb. turn the key and it started right up! The engine sounds good and does not smoke. I did not clean the carb so it could run beyond doses of ether. so that's on your to-do list. The tank is a K1 model with the highly desirable round badges in good shape and it is NOT rusty inside. (I have seen several of these tanks sell on eBay for nearly $100. even with rusted-out holes in the bottom) The tank has a couple minor dents and will need painting. The seat is perfect. with no rust on the pan. it still has the tool-holding clips underneath and the cover with correct pebbled vinyl on top and "Honda" lettering on the back. It has NO cuts. tears or holes. This bike is the version with both a hand lever and a foot pedal for the rear brake--not all have this important feature--but it will need new brake cables and hand levers. It has no speedometer. so mileage shown was just made up to satisfy eBay. Manufacture date: 12/'70
I decided to stop after getting it running and buying a couple basic things for it. (I bought the Z50 just to get a vintage Husqvarna that was packaged with it) The new owner can decide if he wants to restore it for show with genuine parts or use the many inexpensive reproductions that are available and just build a rider/pit bike. (there are no reproduction components on it now) It was the version with lights and although they are missing. the wiring harness. ignition key & switch and brake light switch are there. All chrome is very good. but you will need some fasteners. nbsp;tank mounts and miscellaneous hardware. The exhaust still has the usually-missing chrome Krizman spark arrestor and tail pipe. The underneath picture shows undamaged cases with correct drain plugs--and no J. B. Weld repairs or cracks. The original Bridgestone tires are still on it and hold air fine. The chain and sprockets show little wear. The transmission seems to shift into the gears fine. but I have not ridden it.
Sharp eyes will note that the kick stand is missing as is the hand throttle tube and cable fittings. The cable is good. so I bought a set of throttle pieces off eBay and they will be included. The kick start lever in the pictures was borrowed from a neighbor just to get the bike running and is not included. (it's for an S-90 anyway) However. I also bought an original 1971 Z50 kick starter on eBay and it will be installed and included. I do not have a title for the bike. but will provide a Bill of Sale. I'm not looking for the moon for this little project; we've all seen the fully restored ones do $6000+ while clean. decent riders bring half that amount. and I'm way under that. In fact. a fellow just parted out a complete. non-running. badly weathered 1971 on eBay this week. and got nearly $1. 00. just for all the big pieces! Please call me with any questions; sale is final and shipping is at your expense. I have had very good luck with U-Ship carriers and a little bike like this will ship pretty inexpensively. Local pickup is OK. too. and I will store it indoors for 30 days awaiting pickup after full payment is received. A $500 PayPal deposit is required immediately. the balance via a secure instrument.
