I am the owner. builder. and seller.   About me: I recently left  my job in academia where I worked as a career counselor to pursue my passion for dirty buggered-up hands. . oh and for restoring and building vintage bikes.   For sale here is the 3rd one I've done this year.  View photos of the evolution of the build. as well as some other work from this year on instagram. search user: Tulsaheart.  

The bike is a 1978 CB550 at its core. very positive because it contains the most superior components and technology (engine. transmission. carbs. nbsp;stock air box. wheels. brakes. wiring et cetera) of the CB500/550 four series. Most notably the transmission/clutch.    From 1971-1978. Honda made some crucial improvments in the model's mechanics and performance. the 78 model was Honda's most superior manifestation. and the last year of model production.   Not stock to the 78:  Tank. Seat. and front fender are from a 71 CB500.    Both the tank and seat been customized.   Bike has a remarkably aggressive stance. she sits high. nbsp;riders under 5'11 may want to lower the shocks.   Built for riders 5ft 10" and over.   Shorter riders can inquire about custom height fitment. I am 6' 1" and am very comfortable in the bike.  

 Fast. and very fun to ride.   The rear shocks are an inch taller than stock.   I have replaced or refreshed nearly everything on the bike except the swing arm. and sprockets and chain. I have not split the cases of the engine.   This bike was in excellent shape when I got it. came from CALIFORNIA.  

This auction is the culmination of nearly 1 1/2 years of slow creative restoration and modification.   Carbs are tuned up tight. vacuum synced. ultrasonic cleaned numerous times in the past year. always have kept tuned in everyway. New Dyna-S Electronic Ignition Module installed. Mechanic Owned. Bike has always been taken care of.   I restored her to stock. then custom built it.   My aim ended up being to try to build a true-to-frame caf?© style bike without any cutting to the frame. only modifying existing parts. with some embellishments and subtractions.   Center Stand is removed. but I have it and will include in the auction. nbsp; Stock exhaust for the 78 550 looks pretty great for the most part. but has some scrapes. scratches and a dent or two. some patching in a couple places. none are visible unless looking under the bike. minor.  

New parts and work performed:

New custom 2 stage (base. then clear coat) paint job is really sharpe.  Profession auto grade urethane paint. nbsp;reducers. and activators were used.    It does have some imperfections (the white  "knee dents" on the sides are nice and flat but are very lightly speckled with tiny tiny dark particulates (my gun was clean. just not clean enough to switch from black to white. argh) makes it look vintage. at least that's what I keep telling myself)  hardly noticeable to untrained eyes.   The white "knee dents" are painted-on and lined with thin hand-laid pin stripe. then clear coated.   Racing stripes are professional decals with clear coat sprayed over top.   A couple of minor imperfections on stripes. hardly noticeable from up-close.

RESHAPED/REDUCED FACTORY SEAT FOAM FOR SLEEK LOWER PROFILE

CARBS ULTRASONICALLY CLEANED AND REBUILT WITH NEW RUBBER GASKETS AND O-RINGS WHERE NEEDED.   CARBURETOR FLOAT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT PERFORMED. AND SLIDE GAP BENCH SYNCHRONIZED. THEN VACUUM SYNCED. TO CURE THE BIKE OF THE  NOTORIOUS CB500/550 "FLAT SPOT"  (4000-5000 RPM)  DURING HARD ACCELERATION. THE TIMING ADVANCE SPRINGS WERE MODIFIED. TIMING ADVANCE CURVE WAS ADVANCED 5 DEG TO COMPENSATE FOR THE TIGHTER. NEEDLE CLIP POSITION MOVED DOWN 1 NOTCH. nbsp; IDLE FUEL MIXTURE RICHENED 1/2 TURN. #42 IDLE JETS. AND NEW HIGH-FLOW UNI FOAM AIR FILTER INSTALLED.   RUNS VERY WELL. PULLS STRONG SMOOTH THROUGH ALL RPMS. BETTER THAN STOCK.

NOTE: IF YOU DONT LIKE THE LOOK OF THE 1971 FADED TACHOMETER. LET ME KNOW PLEASE.   I CHOSE THE OLD ONE FOR MY OWN TASTE.   I HAVE ANOTHER 1971 CB500 TACHOMETER THAT IS NOT FADED AT ALL. NICE RICH RED ZONE. DEEP HUNTER GREEN FACE. I WILL MOUNT IT FOR YOU AT YOUR REQUEST.
