Run in the 1971 Trans-AMA
1971 Husqvarna 400cc, -speed
Frame Number: MI3743
Engine Number: 402171M
As off-road motorcycle racing evolved through the 1960s and early 1970s, movement began away from lightly modified street bikes toward machines designed from the outset for competition. In this period before the Japanese manufacturers came to be involved, he Europeans set the trends, uilding ever lighter and more powerful machines. Swedish maker Husqvarna came to epitomize the success of motorcycles developed for and extensively raced in closed-course competition. Its models won 14 motocross and 24 enduro (longer distance) titles through the late 1970s.
The example on offer here, s in good original condition, nd although missing the distinctive red and chrome tank, t features a Hallman tank, orth $1000 on its own. The frame number was run through factory records and is proven to have run in the 1971 Trans-AMA.
It has been on static display for some years in a private and very prominent collection based here in Southern California, nd has a frame number only 100 away from the inimitable Steve McQueen’s sold a few years ago. As such, t will need some general re-commissioning to return it to reliable off-road use, ut it is complete with original Bing carb, tc. The engine turns freely with good compression and all cycle parts are in excellent working order.
