Up For Sale is my 1960 Royal Enfield Indian Police Chief.
Short history lesson. When Indian went under in 1953, rockhouse in England was part owner. In 1955 they started rebadging Royal Enfields and selling them through the existing Indian dealers in the U.S.A. Only 500 of the Chiefs were built and all were exported to the U.S.A. All were built in 1959 and 1960. The motor serial # indicates that this was the tenth bike of that 500. Royal Enfield did not match frame and motor numbers, owever a contact in England said that this frame and motor most likely left the factory together.
I would describe this bike as a mild custom. It has a professionally rebuilt 700cc vertical twin motor. New rings, od bearings, askets and whatever else it needed. All motor parts were purchased from Hitchcocks in England. I have only ridden it about 70 miles since rebuild and it starts and runs well. It will need more break in miles put on it. The carburetor is the correct Amal and works well, owever it may need cleaned again due to sitting for a couple of months as the last time I rode it the choke needed to be on a little to smooth it out. Ignition is a stock Lucas K2F magneto and it works well. All the lights work as does the charging system. Battery is about 1.5 years old. The tires are about 3 years old but only have the 70 miles on them. The original tire size was 375-16 which is no longeravailable however the modern120/90-16 is the same actual size and works well. The bike is always stored inside. The paint and chrome are older and have their flaws but still show fairly well. The 150 MPH speedo is correct for this model and works but is not accurate. AndNO the bike is not any where near that fast, that speedo isjust there for looks. The clutch, ranny and brakes work well also.
The bike is equipped with both a side and center stand. The center stand is a repop and the side stand is a non stock type and has no lock in the down position. I insert a small steel pin in the stand for a lock. The bike does not have an ignition switch. It has a kill button and a hidden anti theft switch. The bike does have a small primary leak. It did have a small leak at the oil filter housing cap but I got that fixed. I am currently using 20w50 oil in the motor.
Included with the sale is an owners and overhaul manual and a copy of the special parts list for this model.
