For your consideration, restored, unning and ridable 1956 Indian Fire Arrow with a Clean California title. This bike has a 250cc single cylinder, stroke, re-unit engine with an Albion 4 speed gearbox. The frame and engine have matching serial numbers of 7793. In a letter from the Royal Enfield Owners Club, he original Redditch factory records confirm that this unit was sent to the Brockhouse depot in West Bromwich, K, n 22nd September 1955 for subsequent export to the United States. According to my research, he Brockhouse company purchased the Indian name and began exporting motorcycles beginning in late 1955, aking this bike a first year Imported Indian production model.
I am a vintage Honda collector and I purchased this bike a few years ago from an old British bike collector. I liked it’s vintage look. I thought the cylinder assembly looks kind of 1950’s nuclear mushroom cloud shaped!?! The previous owner had begun restoration in the 70’s and amassed a large collection of British NOS parts for the bike but never completed the project. I performed some basic service and it started right up and ran well. Since then it has undergone extensive restoration work while trying to maintain some signs of age and character. This is a total “Man Cave” bike, ou won’t win any races on it but who cares! It looks great and doesn’t take up much room. You could even put it upon the wall over the bar!!!
Some unique features of the bike include:Vintage glass Indian head fender lampMetal Indian badge on the timing gear box coverTilt up rear fender for easy tire replacementVintage hand operated tire pump located on the left rear fender supportVintage NOS Dunlop tires, ade in Great BritainLots of polished aluminum and chrome
I chose to keep the fully restored cream yellow painted tins from the 70’s. They are very nice and straight, espite some minor storage chips, cratches and stains. I had the tank inside lined at a local shop and the Indian logos are decals applied by me. The fenders were prepped, rimed and painted to match the frame. They look great and shine well but have some minor inclusions and are not show quality. The original engine and gearbox was removed from the frame and underwent cosmetic restoration. The frame was thoroughly cleaned and painted black. The front end was removed, isassembled, leaned and reassembled with painted fork tube uppers, olished headlight casting and fork lower tubes, hromed triple tree. The engine timing cover, rimary drive housing, alve cover and gearbox were cleaned and polished. Lifter cover, as and oil filler caps chromed. The original Lucas distributor has new contacts and condenser. The original Amal carburetor is very clean and has no leaks. It has been rebuilt with new float needle, eat and seals. The head pipe is in great original condition with a minor scuff and the muffler is a vintage British type with some acid stains and dings.
The original rims have been cleaned and painted. They look great but have some minor rust spots on the chrome. I received NOS Dunlop K70 tires, ade in Great Britain, ith the bike andinstalled them with new tubes and rim liners. These tires are very supple since they were still wrapped in the original lube and wax paper. The brake assembles were cleaned, olished reassembled with many new parts and work great. It also has a new drive chain. The handle bars are in excellent condition and look to be NOS. The brake and clutch levers are reproduction Doherty levers and perches. The throttle is a vintage reproduction twist throttle. The seat and springs are reproductions of the original Lycette equipment.
A new custom wire harness was made using a 6 volt AGM battery in a Lucas style reproduction rubber battery box and NOS Lucas keyed ignition switch, ucas lighting control switch,Lucas amp meter, brake light switch, riginal stator and rectifier. All wiring connections used are era correct British bullet connectors or ring terminals and shrink tube wrapped. The electrical system works properly, ut I keep the stator disconnected to avoid issues, ince I only take it on short rides. It will run off the battery in the daylight for hours without fail. The lights are very bright for a 6 volt system. The vintage glass head Indian lamp on the front fender works but is not connected, he wire is wound up under the headlamp casing. The original Lucas headlamp glass has great color. The NOS Lucas tail lamp assembly is very clear and bright.
The bike starts up cold with a few kicks and warm in a couple kicks.I just rode the bike around the neighborhood, bout 5 miles, his week and it runs, evs and idles well with a little exhaust smoke on acceleration. It rides true and is very comfortable with the seat and suspension. The clutch is strong and pulls well, t will spin the tire in the dirt. The right side shifting Albion gearbox is a bit rough though, t’s not a Honda! First, eutral and second shift well but third and fourth are hard to shift into. It may just need adjusting but I have another matching gearbox that I had previously road tested. I never replaced the unit and it is included in the sale. The bike also has the typical oil leaks and will leave it’s mark on the floor. Back then oil was cheap and seals were expensive. The oil pump covers, rimary and filter nut, rip a bit but could easily be resealed.
This bike is 60 years old and a great piece Indian motorcycle history. It runs well, ooks great with lots of polished aluminum and chromed parts. I have enjoyed owning it and showing it to my friends, ost of which had never seen anything like it before. I hope it finds a new owner that appreciates it as much as I do!
