For Sale Kawasaki H1 Mach III 500cc

Stock Number 684

Frame Number: KAF - 13830

Engine Number: KAF - 53726

Description.

This Kawasaki H1 is finished with the body work of the original and iconic 1969 machine although the frame is actually from the 1970 frame number range. It is in need of work but is largely complete and would make a straightforward and interesting project.

The tank is still finished in the original iconic white and blue paint it does have some chips and marks but nothing significant and is clean inside; the fuel cap has a dent in the top. The side panel and oil tank are both in good order with no dents or damage. the oil tank is missing the decal but the side panel badge is in place.

The mudguards are the correct stainless items the rear is in very good order. the front has a broken strut on the right hand side the struts bolt to the blade so it should be possible to replace just the strut itself.

The exhausts system has various issues. the top right hand exhaust has a dent and scrape at the rear and a further scrape on the underside. the baffles are present.   The lower right hand pipe has one small dent. the chrome is marked and peeling with an area of rust at the rear. although it is solid; the baffles are missing. The left hand exhaust is marked as KH400 and is in poor condition the a significant scrape.

The wheels are the original Takasago items the front is date code September 1971 and the rear December 1969.

The frame is clean and in good order with minor chips and marks. The forks are in good condition. there are some minor marks on the stanchions but these are perfectly useable. The rear shocks are rusty and really could do with replacement.  The rear brake is working on a static check. the front brake cable is missing but the mechanism does work when operated by hand.

The seat base is in excellent condition we believe it has been restored. the cover would appear to be a replacement aftermarket item.

The bike does need some work on the electrical system. the ignition boxes are present but are not connected up. the rear light wiring has been cut. the connections will need a check over prior to connecting a battery.

The carburetors are missing the choke plungers so these will need to be replaced.

We have not had the engine running as the wiring will need connecting but it is free and turns over with good compression and no obvious issues. The oil pump is present but the cable and the feed pipes from the pump are missing. While inspecting the engine we removed the outer final drive casing and identified that there is some damage to the lower crank case where the chain has come adrift at some point in the past. The damage does not affect the function of either the engine or gear box. it is also not visible with the outer sprocket cover in place but the new owner may wish to have this repaired. we have included a detailed picture. The gears select cleanly on a static check. the clutch cable is connected to the lever but is not operating the mechanism so is either not connected to the mechanism or has broken.

In summary this early example of Kawasaki’s fire breathing 500 triple will need some work and some replacement parts. it is a very interesting project bike and while it is not strictly correct for model year. the rare first year paint set is undoubtedly an iconic look. The Kawasaki triples are definitive and appreciating classics so this should prove to be a rewarding winter project in all senses.
