Description

Great Rider!
1960 Norton 600cc Dominator 99 Deluxe
Frame no. 88181
Engine no. 88181
Norton jumped aboard the vertical-twin bandwagon in 1948 when it introduced the Model 7. Designed by the legendary Bert Hopwood, he new 500cc engine went into the existing ES2 plunger-frame/tele-fork cycle parts, marriage that necessitated a redesign of Norton's well-proven four-speed gearbox.
Norton's twin found a new home in the racing singles' 'Featherbed' duplex frame in November 1951. Initially for export only, he newcomer - titled 'Dominator 88' - was the first production Norton roadster to feature the lightweight, ace-proven chassis. Updated year by year, he Dominator had received an alloy cylinder head, ull-width hubs, elded rear subframe, lternator electrics and coil ignition by the decade's end plus - for 1960 - the narrower 'slimline' Featherbed frame among countless other improvements.
Introduced for 1956, he 596cc Dominator 99 twin was outwardly identical to its Dominator 88 brother. Endowed with greater power and higher gearing enabling it to top the magic 'ton', he 99 nevertheless retained all the excellent handling and steering characteristics associated with the Featherbed chassis. One of the Rockers' favourites, he 99 remained essentially unchanged - apart from gaining alternator/coil-ignition electrics for 1958 - until dropped in 1962.
The matching-numbers example offered here hails from 1960 and has been in the same ownership since 1970. Fresh from service, he bike runs very well. Easy to start, t idles well and has a strong and tight feel to the engine. The bike shifts through all gears well and all cycle parts have been gone through, ncluding the Roadholder forks (with brace), rakes and all electrical, ncluding the chronometric speedometer.
Not a perfect bike, osmetically, ut presentable. There are a fair number of scratches, ut it isn’t a garage queen. It was built to ride, eminiscent of the great caf? racers of the ‘50s and ‘60s with open megaphone exhausts with a great, nd loud, ound. The original silencers accompany the bike, hough one has rotted through.
The bike retains its blue California license plate from 1970 and is non-op status, o no fees are due to a California buyer. It comes with a clean, lear California pink slip title.
A great bike, n great riding condition.
