Description

1958 Matchless 350 GL

In the world of vintage British motorcycles. Matchless is a brand associated with fine manufacturing. design and function that came before most all others. Matchless began in 1899 and ceased production in 1966. Matchless. so respected for its quality. even supplied engines to other manufacturers such as Brough Superior (one of the most collectible and highly-valued British motorcycles in existence)

This little Matchless is no exception to the quality expected from this fine Marque.  Although it?ˆ™s only a 350cc single. it has all the style and quality of its larger sophisticated big brothers.

I?ˆ™m selling this machine for a friend whose collection has taken him another direction in the past year. Not too much is known about the total restoration it obviously underwent. but my best judgment is that someone very knowledgeble about this machine completely restored it.

The odometer shows a mere 8 miles and after riding it  a few of those miles it seems that its a real indication of how far it really has been ridden since restoration. The paint is still glossy and new. I?ˆ™d guess this bike has sat in someone?ˆ™s living room and nothing more. The engine is strong and starts on the first kick or two after a gentle tickle. The photos easily tell the story here. The greatness is in the details here. The British dealer tag on the rear fender has the lovely patina of its age without corrosion that would not fit as well with the highly restored appearance of the rest of the bike. The tag also displays its provenance nicely. You?ˆ™ll also notice a British tax disc and id tag on the side toolbox. You?ˆ™ll be hard pressed to find a blemish on this machine or a part that is out of place. From the Lucas headlight. to the original Castrol labelled oil filler cap. the details are there.

I absolutely cannot say enough about the overall freshness of this bike. Over the years we?ˆ™ve seen quite a few British singles. but this one stacks up as the nicest.

The details really are in the photos. Outside of that. I?ˆ™d say that since it hasn?ˆ™t been ridden that much. it will need some sorting if it is to be made into a completely reliable machine that could be ridden daily. Some adjustments like the clutch and likely a few other things will need tweaking. but no repairs or replacement parts should be necessary. Any vintage mechanic worth his salt should be able to make the adjustments and keep this bike purring for years to come.

I'd say this bike is a solid 9 out of 10 and wears its age well. It catches everyone?ˆ™s eye in our shop. It cruises comfortably as any good British single should and I would expect it to be a reliable around town machine after a bit of sorting.

Engine number: 51G3L-16248.
