Description:

The first Meteor twin appeared at the 1952 Motor Cycle Show and it went on sale in the following year. the OHV 692cc Meteor represented Royal Enfield's foray into the arena of the superbike. it stayed in production for 4 years being replaced by the Super Meteor in 1956.

The Meteor was something of a daring venture for the time. it was Britain's largest capacity parallel twin. it also reflected Enfield’s commitment to modular production. While Enfield did not simply take two 350 cylinders from the Bullet single and attach them to the 500 twin bottom end. the Meteor does indeed share the basic layout of the 500 twin crankcase and similarly features separate cylinder heads and barrels.

It was necessary to undertake considerable work to the engine internals and the Meteor chassis. however. to create a solid motorcycle capable of handling the additional power and torque produced. The Meteor was expected to appeal to the sidecar market. so featured a substantial swinging arm suspension set-up to cope with the extra stress of carting a chair around. It weighed a little over 400lb in solo trim.

This particular machine has clearly seen a great deal of time and money spent on it in the recent past. it has been restored to a very good standard and rides well. For a full assessment of the machine please see our description below.

Cosmetic

This motorcycle is in very good cosmetic condition it has clearly seen a level of restoration work. this has been carried out to a very high standard and done with great sympathy for the original machine as it retains many of its original parts.

All of the paint work has been refinished. the tank has no dents or damage and is in excellent condition. there are a couple of very minor marks in the paint. The side panels are in similarly excellent condition with no marks to note. The mudguards are in good shape. both are very solid with no dents or damage and again these have been refinished to a high standard.

The seat appears to be the original item and has a really nice patina of age. the cover is in good order and the base solid. The exhaust fitted is a two into one system. we believe this is not standard. although it may have been an option. The wheels both retain the original rims. the rear wheel is in good clean condition. the front rim has survived less well. the chrome is in poor condition and will need replacement or restoration to bring it up to the standard of the rest of the machine.

Mechanical

The bike starts and runs well it ticks over smoothly revs cleanly and pulls through the gears well. However there is a noise on the top end that will require investigation. we have scratched our heads on the right way to describe this but it sounds like a misfire / sudden release of gas. but we cannot guarantee this. It is possible that this is the head gasket or an exhaust joint but we have not been able to detect the source other than it is from the top end somewhere. this will need further investigation.

The engine cases are clean with no damage and there are no signs of the bike being crashed or dropped. The clutch works well and the gears select cleanly. there are no unpleasant noises from the gearbox. the lever is a little stiff and we have not worked out the neutral finder mechanism. with some general wiggling it does seem to operate but it is a little hit and miss.

The bike does leak some oil. this is coming from the back of the engine or the front of the gearbox.

Chassis and Cycle Parts

The chassis and cycle parts are in very good order.

The frame is undamaged and the paint very clean. The twin hub front brake is working well as is the rear brake. The forks are clean and in good order the action is smooth and the damping effective. The rear shocks are in good order and is damping well.

The headstock. swinging arm and wheel bearings show no signs of excessive play.

The handlebars fitted are not original and the serrated bands are a little too wide this means that the bars can move and will need replacement.

Electrical

The headlight is working well on dipped beam but high beam is not working. the pilot light is working as is the tail light. the brake light is working on the rear brake the bike is not fitted with a front switch. The horn is working. The bike is not charging and this will require investigation.

Summary

This is a beautiful and rare example of Royal Enfield’s first large capacity twin and a very handsome motorcycle it is cosmetically in very good order and it runs and rides very well. there is some work to be completed but this could easily be completed in time for the first spring time ride on one of Redditch’s finest.
