The Sunbeam S8 was based on a BMW design acquired by Sunbeam Motorcycle’s post-war owners. BSA. Erling Poppe modified much of the design to suit the British firm's manufacturing base. including changing the BMW’s boxer layout to a vertical twin to make it look “less German”. Good for about 85mph. teething problems with vibration were soon resolved - but the machines were always expensive to build and never enjoyed the commercial success they deserved. Dating from 1951. VMU 994 was dry stored for many years and was eventually gifted to the Mouldsworth Museum where is was admired for many years This is a particularly good and original example. having been the subject of a nut and bolt restoration including new bearings. cables and wiring etc and all to a very high standard. New EWC wheels with new tyres were fitted with heavy duty spokes; the engine was rebuilt with new ‘Stewart’ high-compression pistons. whilst a new Amal carburettor and correct ‘solo’ ratio worm and wheel were fitted to its shaft-drive. The frame and small parts were powder-coated and everything rechromed as it should be. Finally the engine and gearbox were polished to a fine finish. Running and riding very well. it "pulls like a train” and has been a popular exhibit at the Museum since completion. This really is a lovely example and would grace any collection thanks to its presentation and the thoroughness of its restoration - superb!
I have had many phonecalls about this bike. it is slightly more expensive than the others on EBAY because it is pretty much perfect - you get what you pay for!
