This is a 2002 Aprilia Sonic Scooter. It is a very special "Spice Girls" limited edition. It is on a "52" reg. I have the full V5 logbook.
This scooter was produced for the Spice Girls world tour after they did a sponsorship deal in 1998. But months later Geri Halliwell left the group making the Scooter which had the 5 band members on the side fail. This was a massive sales flop for Aprilia and motorcycling in general. Aprilia managed to successfully sue the Spice Girls and they had to pay the Italian company back.
Google it. here is what the telegraph reported at the time.
THE Spice Girls are facing a bill for around ?1 million after losing to a motor scooter company they had sued for ?220. 00.
Three judges at the Court of Appeal said the group had been guilty of misrepresentation over Geri Halliwell's departure when they signed a contract with Aprilia World Service to promote its scooters.
They said the misrepresentation over the ?500. 00 sponsorship deal had had a wider impact on the Italian-owned company than had been found by High Court judge Mrs Justice Arden in August last year.
The Vice Chancellor. Sir Andrew Morritt. Lord Justice Chadwick and Lord Justice Rix dismissed the Spice Girls' appeal and awarded Aprilia all its costs of the hearings - plus increased damages - an estimated total of around ?1 million.
The five members of the group had taken their case to the Court of Appeal. arguing that they should have won their original claim for unpaid sponsorship fees and guaranteed royalties on a special edition Spice Sonic scooter they promoted.
They claim they signed the deal with Aprilia in March 1998 and Geri told of her intention to leave the following month. At first she said she would not be leaving until the end of an American tour in September that year and this would have had no effect on the contract. But she changed her mind and quit without warning in May.
The appeal judges found that the Spice Girls did know that Geri was leaving before they signed the contract with Aprilia in May 1998.
Ian Mill QC. representing the Spice Girls. had told the appeal court that there were no group discussions about Miss Halliwell's possible departure before the Aprilia agreement had come into force.
When Aprilia refused to pay any more of the sponsorship contract. the Spice Girls launched their legal action. They had claimed ?100. 00 in unpaid fees. ?112. 50 in guaranteed royalties on sales of the Sonic Spice scooter and ?6. 00 for scooters promised to them.
They also wanted the appeal judges to quash Mrs Justice Arden's ruling that they should pay ?45. 50 damages for scooters Aprilia did supply to the girls plus legal costs.
Aprilia counter-appealed over Mrs Justice Arden's refusal to award damages for misrepresentation.
So you have a very rare bit of pop history here. a scooter that would be perfect for any Spice Girls fan or perfect as a talking point in a Caf?/Bar.
The scooter is in fantastic condition. It has a couple of small scratches. but other than that it is great. Starts up and rides like new. Can put an MOT on it for the winner. although I think most will just want to display it :) .
I have the owners manual for it as well. .
