YAMAHA SR500 1979

'The return of the big thumper' was how Yamaha trumpeted the 1978 launch of the SR500 and its off-road stable mate the XT500. indicating the first new big single to hit the marketplace since the demise of the last of the classic Brit bikes. Both the street and trail versions have cult status these days. with the SR500 also very popular as a base for a caf?© racer in the traditional style.

Our bike came to us from an elderly gentleman who has finally given up riding after a lifetime on two wheels. He has owned it since 2004 and it was in regular use up to this year. It is in tidy condition for a 35 year old and shows19600 miles on the clock. although we have no means of verifying this figure. It has clearly been well maintained  but not restored. nbsp;although the tank has been repainted at some point. This is not the greatest paint job and refinishing the tank and side panels would transform the overall look of the bike. We submitted it for the MOT test. which it passed with flying colours. nbsp;the only jobs needed being an adjustment to an exhaust clamp and replacement of a missing split pin.

It can be a bit temperamental to start from cold (they always were - read the contemporary road tests!) but once running it sounds great and rides very well. with bags of torque and agile handling. Gear selection is fine and the brakes work well. It could be used immediately as is. It would also make a great base for a winter project - either  for restoration back to original factory condition or to caf?© racer trim. Mechanical parts availability is good and they are simple bikes to work on.
