1975 MX400B—the First ‘Mono-shock” Yamaha Model—Offered by Original Owner
This listing is for a One-Owner 1975 Yamaha MX400B
Included with the bike is the
Owner’s Manual Parts Manual Yamaha dial indicator (in its original case) for setting timing Extra parts New front brake cable Original mono-shock spring Original fork cartridges (I’m running air over hydraulic at the current time) Spare front sprocket Approved spark arrester New set of fork seals (not installed) The bike has an Oregon title. The engine and transmission are completely fresh. Hasn't been started since total engine/transmition overhaul. It is equipped with a speedometer as needed for ISDT. Enduros. and Hare & Hound Events. It is a Webco drive and a VDO speedometer with a resettable odometer. The tires are old. They look OK with very little use on them and always stored indoors but I don’t know if they would hold up to riding. Fuel tank is a 4. 25 gallon “Pacifico” plastic tank All the other plastic parts (fenders. side plate covers. etc. ) are the original parts. The bike is in great condition and all stock except for the addition of the speedometer. the bars (which are aluminum). and the aforementioned Pacifico tank.
I recently changed the plug. installed new air filters. gave it fresh oil and gas and I have not started it. I also noticed a tear in the boot on top of the carburetor so I replaced that as well. It has spark. fuel. and I have checked the timing. I just can’t kick it hard enough. I’m 76 and have a bad right knee.
It drips a little oil. I think from the kick-start-shaft oil seal. Easily changed. The Yamaha part number for the seal is 93109-20014. These are available on eBay for about $10.
The buyer is responsible for picking it up or having it shipped. We’ll work with the shipping company to ship it.
I am the original owner of this Yamaha MX400. I purchased it from Malcolm Smith Yamaha in Riverside CA. I was in the motorcycle parts business when these came out in late 1974 and Malcolm Smith was a distributor of some of our parts. These bikes were hard to get when they were first introduced and Malcolm was very kind to send one up to me in Oregon in March 1975. It arrived in the crate. I used it in Enduros. Hare & Hounds. ISDT. and Desert Events in Oregon and Washington.
I last rode this bike when Cycle World Magazine put on a 3-day event called the “Baja Trek”. I was invited to attend and was happy to do so. About 50 riders. all from the motorcycle industry. rode from Ensenada to Mike’s Sky Rancho for the night. The next day was a ride to San Felipe for those GIANT shrimp and cervezas. On the return to Mike’s I holed a piston while coming across the lake bed. (I don’t know if it was the shrimp or the cervezas. but I forgot to add octane booster to the Mexican gas. )
In 1992. back in Oregon. I had the engine and transmission completely overhauled at Gresham Yamaha. Besides pistons and rings. every bearing. gasket. etc was replaced—it cost about $950. 00 in 1992. Also. the bike was fitted with all new cables. chain. tires. sprockets. and fork seals.
In 2006 I moved to Arizona and had plans to ride it in the desert here. I’m no longer physically able to ride it so I decided to put it up for sale.
