This is a really nice "one owner" Ducati.
1971 Ducati 450 RT Desmo. It has just had a restoration completed using nearly all the original parts from this bike when it left the Ducati factory in 1971.
The story behind this beautiful Ducati is: after owning the bike for about 10 years the original first owner disassembled it to do a restoration. It remained disassembled for many years at which time the owner passed away. I found it and purchased it about 8 years ago and finally continued the restoration last year. It has a clear Washington State title.
It was restored using as many of the original to this bike parts as possible including as many of the original fasteners as found. The frame, ank, enders and side panels have been repainted. The front fender is NOS and the rear fender is a pattern replacement. The gas tank was in great shape requiring only some sanding and light prep work before being re-painted. It has had a POR 15 lining done to the inside of the tank. I doubt this tank had ever had any of the modern ethanol fuel in it since it was apart since the 1980's so with the POR 15 lining it will last forever (the fiberglass tanks can be susceptible to problems from the ethanol if not lined). The bike was originally equipped with the factory lights and was licensed for the street but those parts were gone; however the wiring from the alternator is intact so it can be restored to street legal use if desired.
The engine has never been apart and runs beautifully - and what a sound it makes! It started on the third kick after 30 plus years sitting idle. It was always stored in a heated shop and several times a year I would squirt oil in the spark plug hole and kick it through by hand. I wasn't going to let this piece of Italian artwork deteriorate.
It is a very easy to start motor when the proper procedure is used with the compression release.
The original side panels were gone but the first owner had had a pair of beautiful aluminum side panels fabricated that even include a nice rolled edge like the stock panels.
It has been restored to be as it was, n its original glory back in the day, o be enjoyed and hopefully ridden from time to time.
Other parts that were replaced:
- All new cables
- New tires F & R
- New Akront aluminum front rim with new spokes
- Forks re-sealed and new rubber wipers
- Carburetor was rebuilt
- New air filter element and rubber inlet tube
- New drive chain (the original sprockets are near perfect)
- NOS front fender
- Petcocks have been rebuilt
- All wiring has been replaced
- All new mounting rubbers for fenders, ank and side panels
- New steering head bearings
- New swing arm pivot and bushings
- New brake pedal spring
- New Ignition points cover
- The seat has been professionally recovered
The rear wheel is original and the rim has some marks and dings however it polished up nicely; the rear spokes show some corrosion. The original Girling rear shocks have no damping.
The bike is listed for sale elsewhere and I reserve the right to stop the auction at any time whether a bid is placed or not.
