Description:
Moto Guzzi began producing the Le Mans 850 in 1976 after debuting the bike in Milan in November. a factory caf? racer low. long and beautifully proportioned. It was not just the cosmetics that marked this machine out as a racer these bikes would hit 130 mph and recorded over 70 hp at the back wheel. It is no high tech superbike. the uncomplicated engine of the Le Mans have helped it to endure. and it’s a machine with a real charm easy to work on. reliable. and easily upgraded.
This particular machine is a very nice example it is cosmetically clean and mechanically in good order. it will need little more than some a recommissioning service. please see below for our assessment of the overall condition.
Cosmetic
Cosmetically this machine is in very good order it appears to be very original although we believe it has been repainted. The tank is in good clean condition having been refinished in the original factory paint scheme. there are some bubbles in the paint under the locking petrol cap cover. there are no dents or damage and it is clean internally.
The right hand side panel is broken on the underside the lug has come adrift we do have the part and it could be repaired. this aside both panels are in good shape. The fairing is in good condition with no signs of damage or repair. it has been repainted at some point in the past. The mudguards are also in nice condition and undamaged the paint is good.
The seat is in good shape it does have some signs of wear but is original. and clean the seat lock is working and the seat strap is present. The wheels are both very clean and show no signs of damage the rear has a wider than specified tyre and it rubs the centre stand when the bike is moved on or off it. once the stand is up or down it is clear of the stand.
The exhausts are a very nice pair of Lafranconi items and are in remarkably good condition. we believed that these were original fitment but have since been advised by someone more knowledgeable on this marque than ourselves that these are quite a costly upgrade to the standard system.
Mechanical
The bike starts up easily and runs well with no untoward noises or sounds of mechanical issues. we have given the bike a short test ride and it runs and rides very nicely with the distinctive Moto Guzzi feel as you rev the engine. The clutch works as it should and the gears select smoothly and well.
We have identified no issues in the drive chain.
Chassis
The chassis and cycle parts are in good condition. as can be seen in the photographs. The frame and swinging arm show no signs of damage. the paint is clean with only minor marks. On the suspension side the forks are clean and the action is smooth. the dust seals are showing their age and will need replacement. the rear shock absorbers are also clean and working well.
Electrical
The electrics are all working. the headlight is working on high / dip and side light. the rear light is work as is the brake light on both the front and rear brake. The indicators are working well on both sides and the horn also works well. the starter turns over the big V Twin with no issues. even the clock keeps good time. The switch gear is fully functioning and shows no signs of damage. the instruments are both working correctly. the speedo is in KPH. the instrument console is in good order.
Summary
This Le Mans 850 is a very nice example. it is cosmetically very tidy and runs very well. it will need very little beyond a recommissioning service and a polish to pass a long winter evening or two and it will be ready to ride and enjoy for the spring time.
