Description

This is a 1972 Monark  "School Boy Racer" 50cc GS factory prepared racer.   It was Built at the Monark factory in Varberg Sweden by factory rider Bengt Gustavsson to compete in the Mexican 1000 ridden by Bergt and factory rider Carl Berggren.   Carl had just finished the 1972 Six Day in Czechoslovakia with a Gold on the Husqvarna team when the Monark people asked him to pair up with Bergt to compete in the Mexican/Baja 1000.   Monark felt that this would help promote the 50cc school boy racer in the U. S. which at that time was popular in Europe.   Monark also had another bike in the race. a 125cc GS ridden by Bergt's brother. Kurt Gustavsson and partner Ingemar Osterberg.

This bike finished the race in 6th place in the 125cc class. and the 12th bike overall. and for a 50cc!

During the restoration process I was in contact with Carl Berggren. and he sent me photos of the bike with him and Bergt. also a complete detail of every leg of the race. he also signed the original tank that was used on the bike. this bike has a six-speed Sachs engine.

Eric Jensen completed all the engine rebuild on the bike. Eric himself is a very. very accomplished racer. if you look at the results of that race Eric finished first in that class on a 125cc DKW. with Steve Hurd.   In the photos the bike is shown with a high exhaust pipe and a light kit. when it arrived at Intertrends in Costa Mesa. John Olsson had a low pipe taken off and a light kit installed before the race.   I also have articles from Cycle World and other magazines that tell about the exploits of this bike.  This bike was displayed in the Petersen Automotive Museum last year in the Baja 1000 display.

Don't miss out on this Historic Monark bike that raced in the 1972 Baja 1000.

There is a photo of bike as raced after the Baja 1000 on the Vintage Monark website. on home page. go to past main page photos. then go to the Monark story by Alan Wise.   Alan purchased the bike from John Olsson of Intertrends in Costa Mesa where it was sitting after being raced.
