Description:

The R80G/S (G for Gel?nde "offroad" in German S for Strasse "street") was the first of the large capacity multisport bikes. The G/S matched a 797. 5 cc BMW air head boxer twin with an R65 frame. at the rear the bike had a new design combined single-sided swing arm and drive shaft with the rear dampening provided by a single shock absorber. The G/S differs from other BMW road bikes of the same era due to its lighter weight. longer suspension travel. and large 21 inch front wheel.  The bike gained popularity with adventure-seeking travellers after having won the Paris-Dakar rally several times. BMW offered numerous optional adventure parts and this machine was the forerunner of the huge market for this type of machine we see today.

This particular machine is in good general condition. it comes complete with a selection of spare parts (see below for a full list and refer to the picture). Please read our description for a full assessment of the mechanical and cosmetic condition.

Cosmetic

This motorcycle is in clean cosmetic condition the fuel tank is in good order with no dents or damage. the paint work is clean. the decals appear original and have faded a little. The side panels are both in good condition. the right hand panel rear fixing is all in place but it appears that the bike has had a thin strip of metal welded on the rear to accommodate the rack mounting and this prevents use of the rear mounting point currently.

The front mudguard is in good condition with just some spidering in the paint to note the rear mudguard is in good condition.

The seat is in good condition with no splits in the cover and a good solid base. The exhaust is clean with only a small dent in the left hand down pipe to report. The wheel rims and spokes are in good condition. the tyres are near new.

Mechanical

The bike has been stood for some time. in order to get it up and running we have completed a basic carb clean. fitted new pilot jets. replaced a float valve and fitted new CV rubbers. The bike can be a little difficult to start. the starter does not always engage. however we suspect that this may be due to the marginal voltage on the battery that was fitted. the bike will need a new battery.

Once started the bike runs cleanly without smoke and rides well. the top end is noisy we suspect this is tappet related however this will require further investigation and possibly some mechanical work. At the very least this machine will need a good service. The clutch works well and the gears select cleanly and smoothly.

The cylinder head on the left hand side has some damage to the cylinder head fins and the right hand rocker cover is scraped a can be seen in the pictures.

Chassis and Cycle Parts

The frame chassis and cycle parts are in good order.

The frame is undamaged and the paint is clean as mentioned above there appears to be the addition of a small fillet at the rear of the frame to allow the rack mounting. This is well executed but we do not believe it is factory as it interferes with the rear side panel mount. The brakes are both working correctly. on the suspension side the fork action is smooth and the damping effective. The rear shock is in good order and is damping well.

The side stand mount needs repair. and the left hand crash bar is bent and the mounting point is damaged.

The bike is fitted with the original airbox.

Electrical

The headlight is working well on high and dipped beam. the rear light is working as is the brake light on both the front and rear brakes. the bike is not fitted with indicators and the horn sounds. The switchgear is good. the speedometer is not working so the true mileage is unknown.

Spares

The bike comes with the following spares. please also refer to the photograph:

1 Pannier

2 barrels which have been honed

2 used pistons

Piston rings new

Various gaskets and seals

2 used cables

1 crash bar fixing

4 clips

1 side stand with fixings

Miscellaneous fittings possibly for the luggage

1 long threaded bar

2 Valve springs

1 battery strap

Carb Jets

Summary

This is a good clean example of BMWs sought after R80 G/S. it has been stood for some time but is now a running and rideable machine. it will need a little work to investigate the noisy top end and certainly a good service. A good example of these bikes is now becoming hard to find and the values are increasing. this machine represents an excellent opportunity to own the first of a whole new genre of motorcycling.
